I got a used Hot Rod Deluxe a while back and all of a sudden the tone controls aren't working properly. When I adjust the middle and the bass there seems to be no change in the tone while there is some change in the treble. All other controls- reverb, drive etc work fine. i took the back off and didn't find anything loose... any suggestions??

Is the amp in the drive channel mode or "more drive" mode?
I notice on my BDRI that the bass is pretty much nil when in drive mode.
It loses it's bassy punch. Will have to compare next time I am at GC.
Also, your pots may be dirty, at best. At worst you may have something else going on.

Hi cintassucks,

What Twinhit said is true on my '98 HRDlx also. Another possibility is that you may have a bad/broken solder joint or two. Many modern amps have poor solder joints, mainly due to the "wave soldering" that is done at high speed. The most infamous spot for bad solder joints on the HRDlx is in the power supply, near the two big white resistors, at the bottom middle of the main circuit board. The excess heat given off by those two resistors can discolor the circuit board (brown color), which tends to exacerbate the solder joint problem (solder joints on back of board). Even if you don't have any discoloring on the board, the joints are still suspect.

Just be aware of the lethal voltages inside the amp, and be safe when working on it. Unplug from electricity and discharge the caps before getting inside. It is quite a job to remove the knobs, jacks and some wiring to pull the board to check the solder joints, but it is also very likely that some joints are bad.

I don't really think wave soldering is the problem because tons of PCB's are wave soldered. It's either a poor quality board or a low bid vender. I agree though could be a cold solder joint. I never really found the tone stack all that great in my HRDlx.

The bass and mid don' work in either clean, drive or more drive. The treble works fine on all three channels.
