The Hot Rod amps are the best for all-around purpose. I say get one, then get a pedal for your Van Halen flavor, that is, if your not happy with the amps distortion (which I don't think you will be, not for Van Halen anyway).

What kind of stuff will you be playing mostly???

For bedroom use the Hot Rod Deluxe is way to loud. I can't say enough good things about a used Crate V1512. Put a used Warhouse Guitar Speakers V30 in there and you have a very good amp for $300 to $350 and can get Marshally tones as well as SRV bluesy.

Mine Hot rod deluxe is too much for the bedroom but great when I play out with my band. I use a Marshall Jackhammer distortion pedal to get dirty with. The distortion in the amp is not what i was looking for. It was the clean channel that sold me on this amp. I also have a Boss Acoustic simulator pedal, a Boss Chorus pedal, and a BBE Sonic Maximizer stomp box. I am extremely happy with this set up.
