I recently picked up a '65 DRRI having wanted one for several years. My other amp is a Hot Rod Deluxe, which I still like but really love the DRRI clean tones--I play alt.country, rock, blues and a lot of 50's/60's/70's sounds. The cleans are amazing.

I strongly prefer to get my sounds from the guitars (volume and tone knobs) and amp without a lot of digital effects. The only pedals I really use with the DRRI now are an occasional compressor and a Boss SD-1 for some overdrive. I am curious if anyone can recommend a subtle, versatile overdrive for the DRRI that is a step up from the SD-1. The SD-1 sounds thin to me somehow. I am intrigued by a Fulltone FD2 but I wondered what others have found to compliment the DRRI.

Oh yeah... right now I am using a newer American Standard Strat and American Deluxe Tele, if that helps.

(Confusing having same avatar as previous BUT...)

I talk from experience and say that the sweetest OD I have on tap is nothing more than the COOL CAT Transparent Drive (V1). I have the COOL CAT V1 Drive also and is equally as good but has a much squarer~boxier tone akin to a nice Marshall (in fact is a clone of the OCD). BUT the Transparent Drive V1 is a copy of the Timmy and is great. I use it with my 57 Deluxe, my Supersonic and with the Super Champ XD and a Les Paul it delivers vintage Black Face tones with wonderful harmonic feedback! at nice vol levels...

I do sometimes mate it with a PROEL pedal also, but that is an altogether different story and really, is a my big personal tone secret...!

Here - see for yourself...

I actually find the TS9 to be a great match with the DRRI... but I keep hearing great things about the OCD, maybe I should check it out one of these days.

I will have to try the OCD also, too many people love them for it not to be something special.

I just dig the route 66 for its comp and O/D combo tone, it livens up any amp and has a great 60's & 70's blues rock sound

+1

Another alternative to your SD-1 might be a Bad Monkey or a Pro Co Rat. I haven't met anybody using the new FD2 yet but all of the Fulltone stuff is built like a tank and gets rave reviews.

Have you tried using the SD-1 more as a boost vs. a drive? I usually put the volume on the pedal at about 3:00, tone 11:00, drive 8:30. Give it a try. The SD-1 is a great pedal especially when used as a boost into an amp on the verge of breaking up.

Hi i run a boss blues driver and a maxon 808 dis pedals in my drri. the trick i think is to turn the amp up to four or more and run your volume from your guitar volume control. but thats just the way i do it anyway.Cheers from.aus.

The Fulltone Fulldrive II Mosfet is awesome. I recommend. Wondeful with the DRRI.

I have a 65 DRRI as well and run a Way Huge "Pork Loin" overdrive pedal. It's really versatile and seems to work organically with the amp. I have to say, though, that it doesn't work well at low volume. Also, the "Pork Loin" is a low gain box.

I like my Digitech Bad Monkey pedal. It seems to work well with all my amps. G-DEC 3 Thirty, Vox AD60VTX and Carvin XV112.

I bought a Route 66 not long ago and have used it with a '66 BF DR and a '66 BF Pro Reverb, they sound really nice with it,adjusting the OD with not too much drive and going easy on the comp. gives everything a good full sound, and you can drive it harder if you choose.

And then sometimes I crank the route 66 comp only and let it push the amp into overdrive with a completely clean boost.

But yep light comp and my overdrive at about 20% and the notes are so sweet !!!
