Hi - i've got an 80's fender champ amp (red knob) sitting in the corner. I got in college as an alternative to my twin cause I would've needed to kick my roomate out to get that load in the dorm. The amp has never been close to what I thought a Fender tube amp should be. It looks fairly hideous-especially when I gaze at my gleaming '70 twin (mammoth though she is) and her little bad boy bro- '65 RI deluxe reverb. I didn't know much about amps back in college (still don't) but I recently looked under the champ's hood to see that it is made in Mexico. I don't wanna bash our brothers to the south-I love Cancun and speak Spanish pretty good but I am not about to accept the fact that Mexican Fenders are as good as their American counterparts. I know I'll hear a lot of flack about that but that is my opinion. I have a Mexican strat and though I do enjoy it (the maple fingerboard is actually quite good) it doesn't come close to my '80's American Strat (not exactly a fine year for strats I think). Anyway-that's not the point. My Champ is facing a fork in the road-unload for probably very little $ or do I try to resurrect it. I've seen a lot of mods out there for this amp which claim to improve clean and drive channels alike. The mods are not very expensive at all and I don't think there is much to loose unless I have to ship it to them in which case that could become costly. Also, reverb is out- I guess it is a tube problem? I am willing to give it another chance with a mod or 2 and a retube. My question is- has anyone any experience w/ this? Is this amp worth the time and effort? Some of the sites I've seen state that this is actually a fairly desireable amp and is renowned for its clean and distorted tones. I really couldn't agree less but maybe my set up is all wrong (ie-tubes,etc). Tell me what to do please! I know I'm not going to turn this into a Dr.Z or a vintage Vibrolux or Twin but I wonder if some tinkering could yield viable results.
