It's rippin". It sounds really VINTAGE! I have a few problems to address. The presence has some squeal in it, and I have some low frequency oscillation on the bottom "E" string. The "A" string and above sounds great! The power tubes are biasing at 50-60mA at the 1ohm cathode resistors which is quite hot. I'll need to mod the circuit it seems. The amp is actually pretty quiet.

Thanks Arjay. I found my oscillation and presence squeal. I had the presence grounded at the third power cap. Moved the ground to the first cap, oscillation and squeal gone. Also replaced the 6.8K resistor to the bias voltage supply with a 1.5K and the bias is okay now. Whew! What a job! TJ earns every penny you give him and after doing it myself, I think it's a good price too.

Hell, it's time to stuff that puppy in the cab and start playin'!

Your work is definitely pro-grade, rjake. Easily the equal of many "boo-teek" builders I've seen who do that for a living.

RAWK ON!

Yes it is, Arjay! Time for some NOISE! The speaker is definitely going to get Weber-ed. The Eminence does sounds better with the circuitry, but still falls a bit short. Thanks alot for the complement, I won't quit my day job though.

I'm going to try to give you an idea of how much this amp chimes. This was recorded with really cheap stuff and Soundclick mp3 compressed, so forgive me for cheapening the really great sound from this project amp. It's a simple strum with a Classic 60's strat with CS54 pickups. Order is bridge, middle, and neck. Volume one is at 2-3/4, volume two 0, bass, treble, and presence in the middle. Old strings on guitar, too. Tubes in the amp: All EH, 12AY7-12AT7-12AX7-6L6GC-6L6GC.

Very smooth, very organic, with just the right amount of bite to keep things interesting.

How about a clip with a skosh more grind for comparison, rjake?

I'll work on it, Arjay. My PC recording stuff is pretty neanderthal. This amp has really tight, deep bass. (I used .047uF instead of .1 in the power tube section so as not to "fart out" when driven hard) The amp is still LOUD. I'll tinker around with the recordings on the weekend.

You know, that OEM Emi frequently gets a bad rap for "flabbing out" but I'm wondering if your cap change in the output stage isn't the better fix for curing this syndrome (as opposed to a speaker replacement)......?

The amp has tons of headroom. It doesn't distort until the volume gets to 10. (max is 12) I changed the AY and AT 9 pins to AX's and I get distortion at 5. It gets real sweet as you turn it up from there. Nothing like a cranked tube amp! The volume is so loud I'll have to figure out a way to record it without distorting the mic input on my pc recording stuff. I may have to go through some more software to adjust the level.

And all that without the nefarious "fizz" and "more fizz" channel-switching chicanery.

Ya done good, rjake!

(hand salute)

A little grind... Please excuse the crappy recording gear and the even crappier guitar playing. Neither one do the amp justice. Amp volume is on 6, guitarist on 714. All preamp tubes are 12AX7's.
