I have this Deluxe 85 amp which I bought around 1993 or '94, but for one reason and another I haven't used it for fourteen years or so. For one thing, I've spent a lot of time playing my acoustic, and then when I do want to use my electric guitar for practice, I almost never do use the amp, because I want to work on the aspects of playing that have nothing to do with amplification.

Now I'm putting out feelers, trying to join a band or at least find some like-minded musicians to jam with. So I need to get the amp working again. The problem is, I don't remember exactly which input jack I'm supposed to plug the guitar into. Furthermore, the amp came with a channel switch/reverb footpedal which no longer seems to work. There are two jacks over to the left, marked for "channel switching" and "parallel" mode, then the right-hand end has "Foot Switch", "Pre-Amp Out", "Power Amp In", and "Headphone". The first and last of those are self explanatory, but I don't understand Pre-Amp Out and Power Amp In. When I plug my guitar chord--which I bought today--into either one of the Channel jacks on the left, nothing happens. Do I need to run a short patch cable between Pre-Amp Out and Power Amp In?

Hi Those Who Squirm,

The "Preamp Out" and "Power Amp In" are an effects loop, and the amp will work with nothing plugged into either jack. Don't plug a guitar into either of these two jacks. The "Preamp Out" jack is to go out of the amp into another amps "Power Amp In", or out to an effects pedal input, or a tuner, etc. The "Power Amp In" will allow the amps preamp section to be bypassed and use the "Preamp Out" from another amp, or the output of a pedal that uses the amp's "Preamp Out" into the pedal's input.

I can't find a schematic for a Deluxe 85, but I would think that the first input jack on the amp would be for your guitar, able to use both channels, drive and clean. The amp should work with nothing but a guitar plugged into it. If the foot switch doesn't work, leave it unplugged. :)

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.

Thanks for responding. I've taken another look and it seems my problem might be the amplifier. For one thing, I remember that when I first got it the armature that contains the speaker cone was was very strongly magnetic. It was so strong that if, for example, the foot switch housing came into contact with it, I had to exert several pounds of force to dislodge it.

Now however the magnetism is nearly gone. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it seems possible. It's hardly been used but it's still an old amp.
