Can I use an Epiphone 1x12 speaker cabinet with a Vibro-Champ XD? The VC has a 4 ohm speaker, and the Epi is a 16 ohm speaker. I thought you can safely go to a higher ohm value speaker, but not a lower resistance speaker. Is that correct? thanks

Yes. I have used a 16-ohm speaker with a 4-ohm C600. It isn't enough of a load on the amp to get the most volume, or best sound, but it works. Your VCXD would sound better with an 8-ohm or 4-ohm speaker(s) though. There is some confusion about impedance matching in guitar tube amps (shouldn't be). The only thing that matters about impedance matching in a guitar tube amp is efficiency. With a 4-ohm amp, using a 2-ohm speaker will allow the amp to reach it's full rated load at a lower volume setting. The opposite is true also, using a 16-ohm speaker, a 4-ohm amp won't be able to reach it's full output rating at full volume. :)

For home basement use, might it actually be better to have a less efficient speaker? I will turn up the volume knob to get a given level of decibels, which puts me closer to the sweet spot of this amp's volume level?

That might be a good idea. The amp certainly will not get as loud, and the sound will be cleaner even at the highest volume setting. It may be harder to get a "driven" sound out of the amp with a 16-ohm speaker. You'll have to try it to see about the "sweet spot" though, the tone might suffer some. Let us know how it sounds. :)

I connected an Epiphone 1x12 cabinet to my VibroChamp XD and, to my ears, it definitely sounds better. I was only able to do a brief A/B comparison, but the 12" speaker gives it a fuller sound, with noticably better lower frequency response.

I then asked my 17 year old son to do a blind listening test. Despite the fact that I was playing clean, with volume only around 2.5, and with licks that are not his taste in music, he was clearly able to tell which was the 12" speaker. He said it had a fuller sound.

There is no loss in volume that I could tell.

Awesome! Now, maybe you can try some 4 and 8-ohm 12 inch speaker, or speaker combinations, for comparison. Don't forget about 10 inch speakers (4-8-16-ohm), they will work and give a different sound also. How about 2x12s or 4x10s? Then, there is the whole open-back/closed back speaker cabinet comparison to do.... Now that you know the 16-ohm will work, your speaker choices are just about unlimited, you can use anything from 4 to 16-ohms. Glad it is working for you. :)
