Bill THANK YOU. I really appreciate all the help. I ended up going to GC and picked up Groove Tubes simply because I couldn't stand hearing the crappy sound any longer ! The amp sounds awesome now and I'm definetly going to study up on those links you gave me. Thanks again man !

I'm glad that your amp sounds great again. I agree, the BDRI is an awesome sounding amp. But I hope you realize that the original tubes in your amp were Groove Tubes and the replacements were probably twice the price of the JJs (from Eurotubes) which are a much better set of tubes. Plus, the people that you talk to at Eurotubes actually know something about the tubes they are selling vs your average GC employee.

Good news, now check how to do your bias
--------------------------------------------
I agree what Tom Stewart of SpaceMan Music , Ottawa, said about bias :

" Under-biased amps will lack punch and the tubes will run noticibly hotter.
Over-biased amps will sound thin and brittle, with the tube running too cool for proper performance.
A correctly-biased ampsd will sound clean and tight at moderate volume, then at higher volumes break up and distort musicaly."

G'day Bill, Mate good work...

As you know I have this lovely gem of an amp and am more than happy with it.

I pretty much run it daily and have rehearsals 3 nights a week.

Since I have swapped out the gt's with jj's, the jj's have held up really well.

Just a quick one.... I am pissed off with my new Pro Tube Twin... fired it up yesterday to her what sounds like a microphonic tube.

When I turn up the reverb it hails a weird feedback..

Anyway I have dropped it into the authorised fender repair guy under it's warranty..

I'm thinking about getting a JJ retube kit for my twin. GT's are just crap in my opinion.

Now arn't you glad you didn't remove those diodes?

Remember this if nothing else 90% of all the problems with tube amps starts with the tubes.

Working for my Dad back in the 60's in his TV Repair shop this was the most common repair, bad tubes.

Hope you get your amp back soon. The tech will probably just slap another GT in it. Get the JJs to get everything you can out of that beast. :D

BUMP !!! Any suggestions for tubes for a really warm clean tone !
If you ever want a "bluesier/earlier breakup" tube, NOS Tung Sol (Not Reissue!) 5881, short bottles are fantastic tubes. They are not cheap, but they are extremely durable, long lasting and under-the-radar-tubes. They can also withstand just about any plate voltage a guitar amp can throw at them! I use them in a couple of BD's I maintain for local blues/R+B players, and they love 'em.
