Wait a minute here.... are you saying that it's the cone kit (original or not) that dictates the watt rating of any speaker???

No, I'm telling you what Harvey Gerst -- the engineer who originally designed these musical instrument series speakers for JBL -- told me over the course of several different conversations and such information applies only to the D, E, and K series of JBL's musical instrument drivers. Any other inference is strictly your own.

Arjay

Ok, now I am understanding it this way:
The D, E, and K series are apparently exceptions to the rule.

That's Harvey alright -- he's forgotten more about JBL's than I'll ever know. He is "da man"!

Since it wasn't touched on in that discussion, the E-series were JBL's attempt to make a cheaper speaker with higher power-handling capability than the original D's. Thus, the massive 11-pound alnico magnet was supplanted by a less-expensive ferrite composite (ie: ceramic). They bombed in the marketplace -- traditionalists (like me) found them too sterile and brittle-sounding, while the younger guys were all comfortably hooked on Celestions, Cerwin-Vegas, and the like. JBL back-pedaled and introduced a new speaker based on the original alnico D-series but using the coil, cone, and suspension components developed for the E. This new series was designated "K" and they are functionally equivalent to the gray-basket D's. I have some of these as well.

Cedarblues,
Thanks for the videos/audios.
Nice playing too. The vid that struck me though was the "band" playing and the rather large gentleman cutting through you and the harp player in mid song! What a hoot! Both of you kept your cool though and played on. True sign of a Pro.

Still thinking about a DRRI or Rebel20 myself. Can't make up my mind.

Decisions decisions...

Like a juicy steak, that's some great info you give there, Arjay. Thanks!

If there is one thing I truly enjoy is history. When one goes over the history of the development of topic X that I may a particular interest in
I jump head first into the pool. The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know. It would be a good idea to pick that man's brain while you still can.

Sure would be nice to have a megawikipedia like archive of such information. Can you imagine what a Les Paul, Leo Fender (for ex.)
authored archive would look like? An "everything you wanted to know and a lot more stuff you don't need to know" archive. Once closely guarded secrets put out for public consumption.
I think one of the problems with the US is the lack of knowlege on the part of it's own people while all those trade secrets went overseas.

Anyway, IF you were to list a set of historically legendary speakers what would they be? For what genre, and how many ***** would you give each model?

JBL D120
JBL D120F
JBL D130
JBL D130E
JBL D130F
JBL D130K

Uhhh, nevermind if you wish.... I don't want to hijack cedar's thread.
Sorry cedar.

Glad you enjoyed it! Forgot to mention, this was at a jam, so that guy joined us on stage to play the keyboard, he asked me what key we were playing in... we're used to this sort of thing :)

The Rebel is a nice amp but it doesn't have that Fender sound, if that's not important to you either one will do the job IMO. I'm not a fan of EL84s anymore, so I have no need for this kind of an amp...

Stick around, Arjay is always willing to share great info and wisdom with the rest of the group :)

Don't worry, we're still on-topic, speaker info is what this thread is all about

Hell, I'd be happy just to see Leo and Les get comemmerative stamps issued by the post office. Those men rate it IMO, having revolutionized music and music reproduction with developments that even today are still industry standards.

As for "legendary" speakers, the D120F, D130F, and D140F are certainly high on my list. Also the vintage Jensen P12N and P10Q, the CTS alnico 10, the Cerwin-Vega 18" bass transducer (as used in the Acoustic 360 and 370), the original 12-inch Fanes, and Celestion's V30.

Not half Bad, it's way Bad and I mean in a Bluesy way.

Nice licks.

PS. I like the amp a 15 kind of takes the edge off a Strat, bet it would sound great as a Jazz amp. I've got a early 60's Jensen 15' I've been thinking of doing something with, thanks for the idea.

Thanks! The 15 works great with a Strat! It sounds just as sweet with a 335, can't go wrong...

I have a 60s JBL D130F that will go in there next, I'll post a clip for comparison.

Sounds beautiful! Love the clean on that!

How would it compare to a vibrolux?

I can relate to a ES 335, I had one for 30 years as my main guitar, played through a '75 Twin. Now it's a Guild X-170, even sweeter than the Gibson. I think I'll build a Fender looking cab to hook up my Super Champ.

Thanks! I don't have a lot of experience with Vibrolux... I'm going to assume we're talking about a 2x10 Vibrolux, the ones I've played always sounded warmer and lack that punch and tight bass I get from a 15, but I'm no expert.

I made a few clips for those that wanna hear what a DRRI with a 15" (aka Spankmaster) sounds like.

Image

Specs:

Amp: DRRI with NOS RCA 6V6, 15" Fender Vibroverb speaker in custom cab. Vibrato Channel, Volume is at 6.5.

Guitar: 2010 Am. Dlx Ash Strat with Fralin Blues Specials. Volume around 6.

This was all recorded with an older digital camera, nothing special... please excuse the sloppy playing.

Clip #1: Strat + DRRI only, I start with bridge+middle then middle then neck+middle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Qhp-0GfMkk

Clip #2: Strat + DRRI, neck+middle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob-XDRhT_o4

Clip #3: Strat + DRRI + TS9 (drive around 8 o'clock), neck+middle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8yQjFzxZhc

And here's what it sounds like in a band:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfHz1Hdbi4g

Enjoy!

Lovely!!! May I ask, by Vibroverb speaker, I'm assuming you mean the Vibroverb Custom??? How much do one of those speakers run?
