I made a few clips for those that wanna hear what a DRRI with a 15" (aka Spankmaster) sounds like.

Image

Specs:

Amp: DRRI with NOS RCA 6V6, 15" Fender Vibroverb speaker in custom cab. Vibrato Channel, Volume is at 6.5.

Guitar: 2010 Am. Dlx Ash Strat with Fralin Blues Specials. Volume around 6.

This was all recorded with an older digital camera, nothing special... please excuse the sloppy playing.

Clip #1: Strat + DRRI only, I start with bridge+middle then middle then neck+middle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Qhp-0GfMkk

Clip #2: Strat + DRRI, neck+middle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob-XDRhT_o4

Clip #3: Strat + DRRI + TS9 (drive around 8 o'clock), neck+middle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8yQjFzxZhc

And here's what it sounds like in a band:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfHz1Hdbi4g

Enjoy!

Not that simple, can't mount it in the same cab, I'd have to put everything back together in the old cab...

I can tell you that it sounds just as sweet, but it lacks some of that tight low end I really like in the 15s... it really works great with the DRRI! Once it's broken in, it was way too harsh and bright when it was still new.

that's why I hanker for a 15" bass cab - been lookin at an Ampeg SVT15E, SVT410HE, and SVT4Pro for bass application and use the 15" bass speaker
to complement the 12" guitar speaker, both of which would be miked individually, of course.

My BDRI has 1/4" out jacks for the primary and extension cab which is why I assumed the DRRI might have had the same thing going on.
You wouldn't happen to have older samplings when it was together would ya?

How long did it take to break in the gold? Playing time-wise

I got the same "decent crappy" computer speakers but it doesn't matter because I already know what CB's amp sounds like.

And once he gets one of these installed......

......He'll be joining a very exclusive club of those who've attained sonic nirvana using Fender's ubiquitous 22-watt DRRI.

It doesn't get much tastier than this.

The ultimate 15" cab! :D

I do have a 12" cab I can throw the Gold in so you can hear it, but it doesn't sound the same IMO... it took a LONG time! I started playing through as often as I could, then took the amp out to a jam or two and let as many musicians play through it. I even hooked my stereo to it and let it play for a few hours. I would say maybe 40-50 hours.

D130F, you can get 'em on ebay, ~$150, sometimes on Craigslist.

Do you by chance know the watt rating of the D130F?

The original D130F coil assembly was rated for 35 watts continuous, 50 watts max. Most of these have since been re-coned using the later E-series kits which have double the power-handling capability of the original D-series components.

Wait a minute here.... are you saying that it's the cone kit (original or not) that dictates the watt rating of any speaker???

And what would the later e series rating be??
I'll try and look it up.

No, I'm telling you what Harvey Gerst -- the engineer who originally designed these musical instrument series speakers for JBL -- told me over the course of several different conversations and such information applies only to the D, E, and K series of JBL's musical instrument drivers. Any other inference is strictly your own.
