Hi,
Looking at the option of either a Hot Rod Deluxe Texas Red or a HRD Bluesman. Both ltd editions with the Celestion speaker. Any major differences between the two?

No. It's a HRDlx with a little better speaker. I'd look at a DRRI and save yourself some headaches.YMMV

Twang,
I just read your post and noted the busted records. ;)
As near as I can tell, 63supro had a real awful experience with
the Hot Rod series amps in the past. I think his love to hate it affair
goes back at least 3 years. Everybody knows his candid story about
how the amp built a wonderfully meaningful relationship with the
amp repairman.
His concerns are not unfounded though. there are many people who
have complained about the Hot Rod Series amps.
For all I know, the new Hot Rod III "may" have gone through some
changes that rectified the problems 63supro and others encountered.
As for the sound of the Celestion. I don't know if there would be any
difference as far as the speakers themselves go, but I haven't heard of
the HRD "Bluesman" Blues Jr, Blues Deluxe and Blues DeVille I've heard of but not a "Bluesman" so I am going to assume you are talking about
the Blues Jr.
The circuitry differs slightly between the amps also the cabinet size will
have an impact on the tonal characteristics of the speaker that will make each amp model a slight bit different.
I believe there is a video on youtube that discusses these new amps.

If Supro says go with a '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue then that is what he
recommends.

I personally have a Blues Deluxe and haven't had any trouble with it yet after one year of ownership and am considering a Celestion Gold speaker retrofit.

It may be that the Blues Deluxe doesn't suffer the same problems as the hot rod deluxe due to omission the components that make the HRD different from the Blues Deluxe.
Some people have had the originals for almost 20 years with little to no problems.

All in all and after all is said and done, it's your ears and your money.
Your mileage may vary but if you do your homework, you may go much farther than our hero 63supro.

I've also got my eye on a Surf Green HRD ltd edition. Any ideas on how many of these were made?

It doesn't sound too far off from my standard tweed BDRI which has a fairly decent overdrive tone though anemic by comparison to other amps but just shy of my tastes' tolerance.

When it comes to Fender aesthetic schemes, Black or Tweed is all I need.
Green? I don't know if I'd recommend a green amp and may be problem should you decide to sell. I'd stick with the normal boring Black or Tweed.
To each his own, though.

PS,
Thanks for the link to the video.
I noticed the blue chicken knobs. Haven't seen that here in the states.
Does it actually say "bluesman" on the chrome label on the back??

Haven't physically seen it yet - just viewed it online but if I find any other links I'll mail them over.
This is that Surf Green HRDx I was on about. I'm actually pretty tempted by the colour now.... maybe I should get more sleep?

Oh no! WTF?? Please get some sleep dude, this has got to be one of the ugliest thing I've ever seen! Sorry.

I'm with Twinhit, black or tweed is just fine for me.

I don't see what's special about these amps, they're the same HRD amps I guess... that vid you posted reminded me why I don't miss my Blues Dlx :)

Ha! Guess you're right. It's pretty ropey looking. Will stick to lusting after the Texas Red.

Yep you bet! Fender did finally address a couple of issues with the amp. The heat related stuff is still there though but at least the boards are slightly better. If by being a broken record I made even one person save for a better built, better sounding amp I'm happy. I hate seeing people piss away their hard earned money in this economy on a troublesome mediocre amp. Especially if they gig a lot.

A note on the Celestion speakers. I run Celestion Custom Elite 80's in my Egnater and when I first bought the cabs, I thought they were a little bright and stiff sounding. They take a while to break in and after they do they turned out to be one of my favorite speakers.
