Ok, so the Blues Deluxe that I just bought has pretty bad tube rattle coming primarily from the V1 slot. I've tried putting over 6 different tubes in this slot, and some are better than others, but I'm still getting a slight rattle from the tubes. Is this just something I have to live with? V3 doesn't rattle at all, and V2 only rattles sometimes.

Also, whats really worrying me is that when I hit a powerchord really hard, the amp pops and crackles, cutting in and out. This wasn't happening before I switched tubes around. Is this a tube??

Thanks

ok so I took out the ruby 12AX7AC7 HGs and replaced the original fender GT12AX7s back in and vioala. The tubes still rattle, but at least it's not crapping out on me. It's strange though because those same ruby tubes work fine in my Carvin MTS. For some reason the blues deville just doesn't like those tubes....wierd. There must be a better explaination than that, but for now I'm just happy that it's working.

Oh, and there was one fender tube in particular that was rattling that I replaced with a GT 12AX7R, and that about fixed the tube rattle too. The blues deville must just not like those Ruby Tubes. Like I said there must be a better explaination, I'm still thinking the tube sockets might need cleaning.

Don't know how old your amp is, but cleaning the tube sockets is always a good idea. The current Tungsol pre amp tubes, seem to be the best choice, right now. Power chords need the most power from all of the tubes and the amp in general. Strong power and a PI tube are also important. Art

Tube "rattle" has nothing to do with the sockets being "dirty". What makes you think that a tube is rattling? Sounds like you have some other problem to me, as it is hard to believe that over half a dozen tubes would all be rattling. When you talk about "the amp pops and crackles, cutting in and out." Sounds like bad solder joints to me, not a tube problem.

I would try to play with the tube cover off.I have an amp that rattles and found that it was the spring in the tube cover

Well the reason I thought it was a bad preamp tube was because this didn't start happening until I starting changing the tubes in and out. Also, when I put the stock tubes back in, the crackling / popping went away.

I've actually had an amp do something similar, but it was more of a fade in and out of volume than a crackling in and out. Anyways a tech fixed it by resoldering some bad cold solder joints. So it could be that.

"Power tranny  " can you please explain? I think I remember hearing that on forums before with my other amp and it was just cold solder joints.

dgcobb,
Does this "rattle" become more noticeable at louder volumes??
I don't know if this is the culprit or not but I was trying to come up with a word that I came across in the past: Microphonics

Quote:
What Makes A Good Tube?
The musical detail or ability to reproduce the sound of the instrument is a key factor in assessing a tube for guitar amplifiers. There is no perfect tube available. Each one has strengths, weaknesses and certain factors that contribute to its overall ratings. Usually a compromise is arrived at in the search for premium tone.

All tubes will exhibit some degree of microphonics. Microphonics do not mean that a tube is unusable. You just have to screen them a little closer and determine where they are best suited for use. Input pre-amps are the most sensitive areas of the amplifier. When used in this application most tubes will generate some noise if you tap on them with a pencil during operation. Keep in mind that doing so can actually damage the tube and make it more microphonic or cause it to fail if you hit it real hard. Although they are screened prior to shipment a tube is an electromechanical device and can be damaged during shipment. A microphonic tube will ring, howl or produce general feedback problems. It will be more noticeable at louder volumes or when used in close proximity to a speaker, typically in combo amps. If the tube has good tone at lower volumes and is free from unwanted noise, you use it in a less sensitive part of the circuit, such as tone recovery or phase inverter applications.

Noise is more of a problem than microphonics. A noisy tube will make random popping noises, crackle occasionally or just hum. All tubes have a certain noise floor; this is the inherent background noise that the tube makes in operation. Typically, you will notice this as a soft hiss or "white noise". Tubes designed for high gain can exhibit more background noise. Other components can cause noise problems that may be blamed on a bad tube. Plate resistors are notorious for causing hiss and crackling as they age and begin to fail. A new tube may better amplify these defects, so try substituting another new tube to be sure of the source of the noise.

Again, I don't know if this is your problem or not but the info may be of help. If so, please let us know.

If really you have mechanical interference, try damper to ring valves. Nevertheless, I think as Shimmilou, could be solder joint or speaker. 8)

Check the power tubes for rattle too. Might just sound like it's coming from V1.

Read the solution I posted in this thread about an odd noise I was having in my BDRI:
