Hey, I'm new to the forum, so I apologize if this topic has already been beaten into the ground. I have a 94' made in California Blues Deluxe (40 Watt, 1x12) and i want to switch the speaker out to get warmer and smoother tones. I am drawn to some of the jensen and weber speakers, but the ones I'm most drawn to are only rated for 50 watts. I don't think that is enough power for a 40 watt amp with pedals, right? I usually play with an ibanez tube screamer and a dunlop wah. Please let me know what you think. I play rock, blues, some jazz, and some pop and classic rock. I have a tele, les paul, and an es-335. There is alot of advice out there, but i really need help dialing it in. For the sake of suggestions, lets assume money is not a factor. Thanks for your comments!

A lot of people recommand Jensen P12N or C12N, both are 50W, I don't know reliability, others trust in Weber ... I stay with original one.
Long quest to find "the sound" 8)

The amp's rating is its maimum output power into a specified load.
The Blues Deluxe is rated at 40 watts into an 8 ohm load (the speaker)

A speakers rating is its maximum power handling ability, so a speaker rated at handling up to 50 watts should be just fine.
One rated for 30 watts might suffer a blowout. if you really kept the amp cranked. :)

You do need to match the ohms of the speaker you purchase to what the amp requires.
So in this case you are looking for an 8 ohm speaker rated at 40 or more watts.

The original in the BD comes with a "special modified Eminence" which apears to be a cheapened version of a Eminence Legend 125. :)

What you put on the input in ways of guitars and effects affects the signal going into the amp, it does not affect the output power levels. :)

Myself I like the Celeston Vintage 30 (rated 60 watts) or the Eminence Swamp thang (rated 150 watts) , and the Eminence Cannabis Rex (rated 50 watts). as cabinet drivers :)

They all sound quite different from each other so you probably would want to listen to them somewhere before decideing.

stick with 50 watt speakers the 125 watt speakers will give a stronger bass and a (percieved) headroom increase...nothing wrong with that.i have a jensen p12n in my bdri and it serves my needs well. the webers though expensive are a fine speaker. magnet types also have their own sound charactoristcs as well. alnico is suited for vintage, blues and classic rock type music, it tends to give a sweet clean and an "angry pig" overdrive sound. ceramic magnets are the basic all-around sound and sound more solid with a more dynamic responce given how the speaker was constructed(different models from different companies).good luck.

I tell you what, these tubes:

Fender Blues Deluxe-Deville Blues Option
Price: $66.25
Description: A hotter matched pair of the JJ 6L6GC's for the reissue or the original fixed bias 90's Blues Deluxe or Deville for a big warm tone along with a standard ECC83S for V1, an ECC81 for V2 to drop the gain with one balanced ECC83S for the phase inverter in V3. These will reduce the preamp gain for players wanting less gain.

with a properly set bias have made me quite worrying about changing the speaker in My Blues Deluxe Reissue.

Either of these speakers would be an excellent choice.

Thanks a ton guys! I guess I'm a bit confused, though. I though your speaker needed to be at least 1.5x the wattage of your amp. Example - 40 Watt B.Dx at 8 ohms needs a 60 watt speaker at 8 ohms. Am i wrong about that? If that is the case, then I have tons of speakers to choose from from the 40 to whatever watt range. I thought i needed something at least 60 - 75 watts or beyond. Blackstrat71, you said you use a Jensen 50 watt p12n? Do you worry about blowing it up or melting it? Please explain more about the wattage becasue I guess i have been given bad info.

The 150% rule is something that I adhere to but I make exceptions on occasion. The P12N might work for you but care would need to be exercised lest the amp be inadvertently dimed or otherwise overloaded. A safer configuration for that Jensen would be a second equivalent speaker used in tandem in an extension cab.
