By putting your volume pedal into the loop, you are basically putting the volume control into a later stage of the amp. You are able to drive the preamp harder and quiet it down right before the output section. If doing this gets rid of hiss, it sounds like it's not in the first gain-stage or the output tubes. This is just a guess.

Hiss can be caused by a variety of things, the trick is to isolate it. The most likely causes are preamp tubes, plate-load resistors, bad solder joints, dirty tube sockets, dirty jacks, dirty shorting jacks in the effects loop, output tubes, even the switching circuit could be a source, but it's less likely. **There are voltages inside the amp that can KILL YOU** Taking the amp to a qualified tech is the best way to sort out your issues, but switching out preamp tubes until you find a bad one is something you could try.

The hum in the reverb could also be a tube... switching out tubes to find problems as well as tweak tone is something a lot of guitar players like to do. Not all tubes are created equal. Just don't mess with the output tubes (6v6's on this amp) unless you know what you're doing.

I have the same problem: when I switch from burn to clean channel, I can hear a loud "gunshot-like" noise.
Is there any solution?
