Order cab, pick color, options, etc... I went with a JD Newell cab.

http://www.newellamps.com/catalog.html

Cab shows up, looks beautiful!

Install reverb tank

Install speaker, Fender Vibroverb 15" for now, JBL D130F might go in later...

Remove chassis from old cab and install in new cab, fits perfect!

And finally, the Spankmaster! :)

The whole conversion took about an hour. I was worried about everything fitting in there correctly but JD's work made it easy!

BIG thanks to Arjay who always goes out of his way to help us newbies with all Fender amp related questions! I now have the sweetest sounding DRRI I can ask for and can take it just about anywhere I want to.

And soon it will have a proper tube chart to complete the transformation......

Yeah, I built mine a couple of years ago. Then I built three more for clients. It seems to be a real popular (and easy) conversion -- I'm surprised that FMIC hasn't picked up on the trend and offered one of their own. There's virtually no R&D involved.

Arjay is the Spankmaster creator, he gets all the credit! I envy his collection as well! 8)

I'd buy a used DRRI, around $600, cab will run about $300, speaker cost will depend on what you go with, the Fender Vibroverb speaker is about $75 off ebay. So for about $1000 you too can have your own Spankmaster! :)

I'm not sure about that, fhopkins. I may have heard the term a time or two before actually applying it to this particular conversion. I do know that there are many of them around, eg: Dave at "Gramp's Amps" has built a few, Larry Rodgers as well. I chose the blonde/wheatstraw cosmetics but they look equally tasty in traditional blackface. And I've even given some thought to building another one as a drip-edge silverface since I recently came into a square yard of NOS '68 grill cloth and I know where to get an NOS silverface blackline control panel. I already have a stock of drip-edge molding on hand, salvaged from other projects. Nothing goes to waste in my shop -- I'm like an Illinois pig farmer (I use everything except the squeal).
