My SuperSonic is about 3 yrs old and it recently started exhibiting intermittent noise (think like a faint electrical storm in the background) and this only occurs in the Vintage channel. Foot switch is plugged in, fx loop has knobs set to min (no jumper). I just replaced the 2 pwr tubes a week ago with matched Groove Tubes 6L6s.

Since the noise is confined to the Vintage channel, I replaced V1 and V2 with new ElectroHarmonix 12ax7's. I also swapped an extra tube with V3 and nothing has stopped the noise. Granted, like others have indicated there is some noise present on the SS even on the Vintage channel. Is it time to pony up and pay a tech to troubleshoot? Any ideas are appreciated.

I think you are going about troubleshooting it correctly. I would try replacing the other preamp tubes (phase inverter, reverb) one by one and see if that helps, if not, you'll probably have to take in to a tech.

I also recommend going one by one with it. How bad is the noise? Granted there is always some sort of hiss with tube amps but have you tried it in different power outlets or a different building even? It may have nothing to do with the amp.

Best of luck!

Try this. Go one-by-one through each tube (esp the 9-pin minis). Make sure the pins are straight. Spray contact cleaner onto the pins & into the socket holes. Push each tube in-&-remove (push and pull straight up-&-down so as not to re-bend the pins) a couple of times. This procedure often removes surface goombas that can cause inconsistent contact. I kinda liken it to "lapping" valves on a car's top-end.

Reseat all, and try the amp again. Good luck!
