I'm trying to date a '65 Twin Reverb reissue. The serial number is AC 083xxx

When I look online regarding modern Fender serial numbers it says that if it starts with an 'A' that is from 1990. But I don't think this is correct since Fender did not make the '65 Twin Reverb until 1991.

Can anyone confirm what year my Twin is from?

many thanks.

Take a look at the EIA manufacturer's codes stamped on your amp's trannies. Those numbers will decode the year and the week within that year that the components were made.

Hi robes,

The "A" that Fender is referring to is part of a two letter code usually written on the sticker on the back of the chassis. The first letter is the year (A=1990), and the second letter is the month (A=January). So FF for example, would be 1995, June. You might have to remove the chassis to be able to see the sticker, or use a mirror on a telescoping arm. Sometimes the sticker isn't there, so the numbers on the transformer might be your best bet as Retroverbial suggested. You could also try emailing Fender with your serial number.

I've always been curious about when FMIC deleted the dummy "ground" switch on the rear panels of the re-issue blackfaces. Both my early '90s TRRI and my DRRI have them......a perfectly usable Switchcraft part, connected to precisely nothing.

I wired the one in my DRRI to select between the 4Ω and 8Ω secondary taps of my custom output tranny.

Interesting point of discussion.

I know on the older amps like my Deluxe Reverb and Twin Reverb they had a ground switch, the Twin was a 3 way. The Twin had the Red 3 prong plug and the Deluxe just had the 2 prong non-polarized plug. I used to have to switch the ground on the Deluxe to correct the ground to avoid getting shocked. We used to do a ground check on all our equipment back then before a gig, something most guys today don't know about. The Twin usually was okay because of the 3 prong plug, except when something like the house wiring was goofy or we needed some kind of adapters, then I might have to flip the switch one way or the other.

So I guess what I'm asking is, are the ground switches on the reissues even hooked up? Functional? Strange if they weren't.

The thing I miss the most on the reissues is the 120V outlet on the back. I used it all the time for pedals. Don't own a reissue, maybe I will someday but the outlet was a nice feature.

The "ground switch" (it should more aptly be labeled "polarity") was deleted from the re-issues at some point but I'm not certain precisely when. Both my TRRI and DRRI have them and they're both early editions from the mid-90s. They are fully functional parts but not wired into either amp's circuit.

Fender used a conventional double-throw switch for this feature on the original blackfaces and silverfaces up until circa 1971, when a triple-throw switch replaced it. This coincided with the introduction of the grounded 3-conductor power cable for most amps (with the red plug you mentioned).

I discussed the reason for the re-issues' lack of an AC convenience outlet elsewhere on this site -- use the search function to locate the post.

When I get a chance I'll check one of the reissues out and take a look at the ground switch. And you're right it's really a reverse polarity switch. Simply reversing the the plug on old amps without a switch did basically the same thing, before the polarized and 3 prong plugs came out. I've rewired several houses which had the old 2 prong outlets, it's amazing what you find in the walls of some of these houses. Some of them were a ready made electrical fire trap.

Amen to that!

I cringe everytime I see it.

Be careful, Johnny.

This guy is putting in a lot of work to spam us with this website. I just searched his posts, same pattern. Start a new thread about a SN#, then wait to post a reply with the website. These spammers are sure getting creative.
Sorry guys you've been duped

Obviously a zit-popping excretavore who should find a more productive use for his time......

I tried dating a '65 trri once, it didn't last very long. She was just too loud and I could never get a word in edgewise. Unfortunately I dumped her and am now happily dating a '67 Bandmaster and a '73 bandmaster reverb.

P.S
If she ever asks if she's too heavy, change the subject.
