My HRD 410 is about 4-5 years old and still has the original tubes. The amp performed perfectly during a soundcheck for a gig last week. About 30 minutes elapsed before we started playing. About 2 songs in, the amp lost 80% volume, and was distorting, though I was using a clean sound.

The amp came "back to life" and sounded normal after 15 minutes or so. I checked to make sure the tubes were seated well, and they all had a faint orange glow. Anybody know what's going on here?

Hi DavidTank,

The first thing that comes to mind, for an intermittent problem, is bad solder joints. Usually the problem will appear after the amps heats up, then the amp can "come back to life" after the joint cools. It is a fair job to remove the main circuit board to check all of the solder joints, but it may be necessary. The bad joints could be on the tube circuit boards, which have the solder side facing out, so you can check and touch those up without having to remove the circuit board.

Another possibility is the filter caps in the power supply. Look for any crusty, powdery substance where the positive leads come out of the caps. Also look for bulging/misshaped caps. You will also have to remove the circuit board to replace them. My HRDvl came with the "IC" caps, that aren't a very good brand. I have removed the circuit board and retouched any questionable joints when it was new, to preempt any solder joint issues. I have done the same in my HRDlx, and after ten years I also had to change the power supply filter caps in my HRDlx. I used F&T, but there are several other good brands available.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.

Thanks for the response. I will probably take the amp to somebody who ISN"T likely to electrocute himself if he plays with the motherboard.!
