got a pro junior here. i've been using JJ el84's. sound pretty good, but without my amp re-biased. i switched back to the stock tubes that came with the amp just to compare the sound differences between them and the JJ's without having re-biased my amp at any time.

I noticed that available volume seems to have decreased with the sovtek's. Not to an alarming degree, just that its noticeable. still pretty loud nonetheless, but i do feel the JJ's provided more.

the reason why i struggle to make the obvious conclusion is because the sovteks did redplate at one time, and i wonder if that had anything to do with it.
Does anyone know if its simply just that JJ's pack more than sovteks by character?
I lack the experience to know firsthand.

I may pick up a pair of sovteks with same rating as the ones i have now and see what happens, but any insight is appreciated

I think that the JJs will sound different than the Sovteks maybe louder, at least the JJs will be brighter, so the perceived volume will be louder too. How did you redplate the tubes? I thought that the PJr had a fixed bias with no adjustment. :?

one of them redplated by random one day. not really sure what happened, i've used these off and on and havent had it happen a 2nd time, which is great. I believe it was billm who suggested that the cause may have been that the tube was a tad loose in the socket and got angry. i usually, not always, will check now to be sure the tubes are all seated properly just as a safeguard, so maybe that explains why it hasnt happened again.

Yeah, I can see how redplating a tube may cause it to sound bad afterward. I think that the relabeled Sovteks are pretty good, sturdy, long lasting tubes. I wonder how the new Fender GT (relabeled Sovteks) compare to new JJs. You could have the best of both worlds, the GT EL84 S are tubes made for Fender in the JJ factory. The GT EL84 R are the relabeled Sovteks. The color codes are for when you want breakup, blue-early, white-med, red-late (I use the red labels). But, I would look at adding a bias adjustment, I understand that the PJr is biased very hot (too hot), just like the BJr, and will go through tubes prematurely. I installed the Billm easy bias mod in my BJr, so I can run my tubes biased the way that they should be. I am very happy with mine after that, and some other Billm mods. The tone was not ruined by the cooler bias, quite the opposite, it is a much more open and versatile sound now, and I can still dial in that same BJr sound that I had before. Of course modifying your amp can void the warranty, if you care. :D
