Hey folks, I'm new here.

My band went into the studio two weeks ago and I was looking forward to using my Twin Reverb on the EP we're working on but when I turned it on, there was this unexplained white noise! Even with every dial turned down to 1 there is a constant static noise. Sometimes when I turn it on it also feeds back, yet there is no instrument plugged into it.

Our drummer - who is quite tech savvy and not just a drummer - had a look at it and couldn't figure out why it was doing it.

Any suggestions/ideas would be much appreciated!

Cheers.

Yeah man, that's no good for recording ! The first suspect/s would be the tubes. How old are they ? Another problem could be dirty tube sockets. The feedback noise would also indicate a bad tube. Does the white noise change, depending on wall outlets ? Are you guys running the amp through a power conditioner/filter ? Are the pre amp tube shields in place ? I know, a bunch of questions. BTW The Twin will have some background noise, but it should get to a tolerable level, given some regular maintenance and attention to low noise tubes. Art

I agree with aclempoppi, it sounds like a tube and/or socket problem. The feedback with nothing plugged into the input jack, may be a microphonic preamp tube. You may even have noisy preamp tube(s) also. The tubes take a pounding in a combo. It could also be as simple as the tubes not seated all the way in the socket, or even bad solder joints.

yes, I have a BRAND NEW 65 Twin reissue and am experiencing the same problem. It is "white noise", not a hum. I have tried adjusting the tubes with out satisfaction. I have checked the polarity and ground in the studio and all is correct. Does anyone have any further suggestions? Taking it in to where I purchased it tomorrow to see what they have to say.

Well, brand new twin reverb is in the Fender Authorized Repair Facility for warranty repair. I'll be interested to find out the cause, hope I don't have to wait a month.

When I bough my BDLx last year, V2 was making a huge white noise. Changed under warranty, with a bemol, 3 months delay !

Any updates on these issues ?

Mine was one of the Cheap garbage micro pots (volume on the reverb channel).

I still can't believe fender puts such cheap crap on such a nice amp !!!

Fender are you listening ???
Charge us an additional $20 and give us decent pots on our $1300.00 amps !!!!!

Its half O.K. for those of us willing to dig in and find the problem after warranty runs out, its a huge expense for those who can't.

So while I wait on Antique Electronic Supply to ship my $2.95 pot all i have is the normal Channel to play through.

Pot changed white noise still there.

The pot was bad and was adding a lot of unwanted pops and static, however the white noise starts early into the sweep of the pot (volume reverb side) and stays constant untill 80% of the sweep then goes away.

Only on the reverb channel, normal channel is quiet as it can be, next crazy deal is that most of the white noise, but not all goes away if you plug in a guitar.

Is there one filter cap that only affects the reverb trem channel ?

ARGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!

Making me crazy here folks !!!!

Thanks

Is the noise only there when the reverb pot is turned up? Is the noise a steady hiss, or more of a random crackling static noise?

steady static, not a hum, but not random popping either.

The reverb pot has no affect on the sound.

Since the issue is apparently limited to the reverb channel, you could try isolating the symptom by stages -- one by one, pull V2, V3, and V4 to determine if there is any decrease in the hiss. That may help determine where the problem lies.

+1 Retroverbial,

Thinking the same, maybe one or more preamp tube(s) or a socket problem (V2?). :)

+1!

I figure if we can nail the problem down to a specific stage, that narrows the arena substantially. Tube, tube socket, or some associated component is the likely cause -- or a cold solder joint somewhere within that stage (RoHS-compliant solder is notorious for causing issues such as those).
