No champ this week. LGS called their fender rep to see when they would be in but hasn't heard anything back yet. Oh well, trying to be patient learning some new stuff and theory. I just ordered the Fretboard Logic SE book, should be here next week. I'm hoping that'll kind of help me pull together all that I've learned and make it all connect in my head, hopefully leading to better improv skills and whatnot.
I looked through the tubedepot and a few other places but I think I'll hold off on upgraded tubes till I see and hear the new champ for a bit, then go from there. I am starting to gather materials though to start building a 10" extension cabinet. What would be a good 10" speaker to use? My favorite 12" is a celestion vintage 30 if that helps give an idea of the sound I'm looking for.

I have original 1949 and 1951 Champion 600 and 800 amps. They seem to have a thin almost-like double knit polyester grille cloth (see photo). Both my 600 and 800 have a medium brown color (matching the background color of the dial plate). These amps have a killer tone. Play them at "10" all day and they last and last.

Running metal RCA 6SJ7 pentode, glass GE 5Y3GT rectifier (on 800), Bendix 6106 recitifer (on 600) & glass Raytheon 6V6GTY power tubes in both. Both have Triad irons. Original Cleveland 6-inch in 600 and MAYBE Jensen 8-inch in 800. Both speakers have been replaced with Weber Vintage.

Got my Champ yesterday, finally! Fender was backordered a couple weeks apparently. Got a chance to play it this morning and wow, what a sweet little amp! My first impressions of it were very positive to say the least. I didn't expect that kind of sound from the little 6" speaker, but I have to say I was pleasantly suprised. So far it gets to sounding the best around 8-10 with my neck pickup cranked up to 9 or 10...at least with the sound I was looking for.

I probably won't bother changing a thing on it right now until I play it a lot more. I'm just enjoying it for what it is and if I get bored or want to change things up later, I'll look into maybe trying some different tubes, speaker, and maybe even the tone stack mod.

The only issue is, there is a small amount of hum, which I expected and it really doesn't bother me while I'm playing. However, before getting into recording with it, I may pull the chassis out and work on twisting a few wires up and doing some shielding.

Right now I'm just playing my Classic 60's Strat through a FullTone Gold cable, but I'm going to get a Boss FDR-1 and a Tremolo pedal to throw in there, I should be pretty content then.

I have tried dressing the wires, isolating the input jacks, more shielding, and none of those things helped much, maybe a little. The only really noticeable improvement for the hum was a different preamp tube. I have tried several in this amp, and some had more of the hum than others. But, the preamp tubes that had less hum, weren't the same ones that I liked the tone on, kind of a trade off. Looking at all of the available mods and suggestions for mods that I could find, changing the filament supply to DC sounded like the best option to me for reducing the hum.

There is also another noise on the C600, a kind of buzzing that peaks at about 9 on the volume knob as you rotate the volume from 1 up. For that, I'm going to try to get rid of the little circuit board that the volume pot and jacks are wired to, and wire a new pot and new jacks straight to the main board.

But, without any mods at all, the little C600 is still about the best little tube amp around in that price range. I'm sure that you will enjoy it just as it is. :)

BTW, try it with an external 12 inch speaker, sweeeet!

Yeah, I have to say I'm pretty happy, especially with an amp that was only $150.
