Hi guys and girls,

I have a Fender Cyber Twin (1st edition, don't have serial number to hand) which I purchased 2nd hand from Ebay. Lately it has had a fault which started off as quite intermittent but has got worse.

When playing (on any preset, at any volume) after 2-5 minutes it glitches out, emitting a crackling noise (electronic crackle) and the digital display goes haywire, changing the presets, altering the volume, effects etc and then the sound cuts out. Changing the preset or even altering the effect using the rotary knob fixes it instantly, but then after a few seconds it starts again. Its incredibly frustrating as it limits me to 2 minute bursts of playing and is effectively stopping me from using it for playing live or recording.

I have opened it up and inspected the PCBs but I have little-to-no electronics knowledge so I didnt know what I was looking for or should see. Was hoping it would be something simple and obvious. I have a feeling that its something to do with the PCB/module but have no idea where to go next as I cant really afford to have it fixed professionally. I'm so frustrated I just want to sell it and pick up a simple valve amp.. but I cant even sell it in its current state. Can anyone give me any pointers?

Thanks

Hi Dizlatron,

Are you handy with a soldering iron? It could be bad solder joints and/or dirty pots. If you look closely at the solder joints with a magnifier, you might find that some are cracked or dull looking (cold joint). Just go over any questionable joints and reheat them and add a touch of solder to each. The pots could also be cleaned with some electrical contact spray cleaner sprayed inside while rotating the pots and selector switches. Obviously you want the amp off and unplugged when you work on it. Just a couple of possibilities. :)

Problem look to be in Power Supplys sections. On shematic diagram, it have 4 power supplys.
Often a bad solder, or burn printed circuit .

If you can look around of rectifier diodes and their resistors and capacitors for bad solders.

Hey Diazlatron, my buddies Cyber-Twin was doing the same thing and it turned out to be the big Data knob that you turn to switch presets. It got some dust in it or something. You can try turning the knob back and forth a whole bunch of times to try and work the dust out. You can also try spraying some TV Tuner Cleaner in the knob (available from Radio Shack.) If you take it to an electronics repairman they may be able to clean it out for you as well.

Sorry I never saw this before now.. My cybertwin did the same thing... I have used it for years.. Luckily I was a advanced electronics tech in navy so I was not afraid to tear it apart... I just checked every connection but still did same thing.. Then I happened to push in the chips on the back of the board right behind the lcd panal.. The two chips both pushed in further and it stopped doing all that crap... Works good now... Hope it keeps working
