I can't remember how many TRs that you have, but are those JBLs stock speakers in the amp? And not one bias adjustment? Very good. As many amps as you have, I'll bet that you have 2 modified for every one that isn't. But, if you insist you can have your license to chastise us lowly amp modders. Of course it might be revoked if we discover that you are holding out on us!

Here we go again. Fender did produce some amps with JBL's. Speakers and tubes aren't mods and neither is a bias adjustment. Fact is, you'll never take a low end mediocre amp and mod it into a great amp. You're always fighting cheap, failing components. The OP has a 2 month old amp and is unhappy with it. I still say cut you losses and dump it. It's just not worth the aggravation.

shimmilou, if you want to mod your amps, great, I don't think anyone here is losing any sleep over it. If you can afford to piss away a 5 year warranty great, but not everyone here has the ability to mod or repair their own amps. I've bought many great amps that sounded great right out of the box. I just don't keep what I don't like or need. One of the only amps I didn't really like was my HRDlx.

"It all depends on what your definition of is, is". I guess that the semantics routine never gets old.

But, I suppose that you have a very good point, changes that don't void the warranty would be better than changes that will void the warranty. :)

The silverface '78 came with orange-frame D120Fs as OEM.

I upgraded my '65 TRRI with a pair of K120s. We'll score that as a "mod" for discussion's sake.

My blond "Spankmaster Reverb" has an all-new cab, 15-inch JBL, the Fritz mod, and a switchable dual-secondary output tranny. Definitely "modded" by any definition.

My brown "Pro" utilizes a dead-stock '68 Bandmaster chassis stuffed into a combo cab box with a pair of CTS alnico 10's. Let's call this one "semi-modded".

My piggyback "Dual Porch Weasel" likewise uses a dead-stock '80 Princeton chassis with all-new furniture and a pair of K120s. "Semi-modded".

I've been at this a long time and I know what works and what doesn't. And I never let my "experimental" curiosity exceed my capability to make it happen. OTOH I never base any new project on an amp that didn't have good fundamentals to begin with. Having to mod a brand new amp just to get it to sound halfway decent strikes me as being the epitome of folly IMO. YMMV

Retroverbial, you talk about good quality amps, but IMO Blues Junior is not as good.

I think it's a fairly safe bet that among players who appreciate quality amps, which includes Retroverbial, that your comment is the general consensus ... along with the rest of the AHR series.

In reference to some of the previous comments. The Blues Junior is/was the only amp I ever modded. In fact I haven't even so much as changed a tube, let alone speaker in my Rivera since it came home from the dealer so I am yet another player who plays his favorite amp stone stock.

I bought the BJ for a unique purpose and it was the only 15W tube amp I could find in my area at the time in that price range with a 12" speaker so I was pretty much stuck with it. My attemps to improve it were marginally successful but not enough to make it a good sounding amp.

The way I see the situation with those amps it's the price point that sells them and those who can't afford better amps and/or those who are too young to remember good amps prolly don't get a lot of exposure to good amps so they laud the AHR amps as being good because they don't know any better.

I am going against the flow of all these guys,I say mod the thing. All of these guys have good points as to,if you bought the thing, and 2 months later you wanna change it, why didn't you buy just a different amp.
But this amp is probably not gonna be really worth anything some day and they are not incredibly expensive.I would figure what you want more out of the amp.I would start with all the obvious stuff like swapping tubes changing the bias.Fender puts in cheap stuff to begin with, maybe do a speaker swap. Then in the end maybe up grade components like the transformers or some caps they have upgrade kits for most amps.Musicians have been modding there instruments for a long time to make it more usable. So go for it .

I'd rather build a 5e3 Tweed Deluxe or a 5F1 Champ circuit. Classic Fender tones were never built around EL84 power tubes. People who say the Blues Jr has that "Classic Fender" sound do not know of what they speak. I'd even rather hand wire a Champ 600 than a Blues Jr.

If only I had a grand......(sigh).

But since I'm loath to spend such a profligate amount on arguably dubious pursuits, I'm playing this weekend's two-nighter with this "modded" rig......

Image

An absolute dead-stock '66 Bandmaster through a home-cloned Showman cab stuffed with a pair of V30s.

It isn't tinny, it isn't fizzy, and it only cost about eight-hundred bucks to put together.

Keep the "sizzle", I prefer the steak!"
