if i'm running my amp (HR deluxe) into a mixer from the [pre amp out] jack, which type of wire should i use, a 1/4" speaker wire or 1/4" shielded guitar cord? i was warned not to use shielded cords for speaker wires on my powered mixer and don't want to damage anything using the wrong one for this.
thanks,
frank

Shielded cables should be used for line-level signal outputs, just as if it were a microphone.

Instrument cables DO work well with mixer inputs and self powered speakers... even though I recommend (and use) shielded speaker cables for my Crate Traveler Speakers....

You're only sending a fairly small signal to drive the mixer's input channel in that application...

You WERE warned, and they had good reason<G>

Your shielded cables are made for carrying High Impedance low powered signals...

The center wire is probably not nearly suitable for the power you're going to be pushing through it...

A quality speaker wire is a twisted pair of heavier wires, the twist helps keep external electrical/magnetic signals from interfering by reversing the polarity of interference with each twist...

Fender addresses it in a very nice article http://www.fender.com/news/index.php?display_article=458

Your amplifier is designed to push a considerable amount of current through a 4 to 16 ohm load... VERY low impedance and high current...

For example 40 watts through an 8 ohm load takes over two amps of current! Put two speakers in parallel on the same power setting, and you're doing about five amps...

All the best!

Yeah Frankie, a regular guitar cable will do the job. If the mixer has a line level input jack on one of the channels, that's your best choice. Otherwise the signal runs through a mic preamp, and the adjustments on the mixer could be a little touchy. Some mixers have a trim pot on the channel control strip to adapt to different levels of input. Just a suggestion; if there is a long run(over 10'), I would use a DI box between the amp and mixer with a mic cable. The mic cable keeps the noise lower and would match the mixer's input better. Good Luck ! Art
