I read a lot about improving the sound of this amp by changing the speakers and preamp tube. I bought a jj/tesla 12ax7 and a jenson mod speaker, but I can't get the damn back off to install them!! I removed the four screws, but it feels like they used glue as well, it's not budging at all no matter how much I yank on it. Could anyone one who has done this mod give me some advice, as I can't figure out any way to get it off short of taking a chisel to it, which I won't do. :x

I had a horrible time trying to get the back of mine off. I took the whole damn thing apart to get it off but then it was easy and i realized I really did not need to. I think just the 4 screws in the back and then like wiggle it as you are pulling. Use finese(sp)

I hope I don't have to pull the whole thing apart, but it is looking likely. I did remove the 4 screws, and I tried wiggling it, but so far no go. Christ, I wish engineers would take into account that people need to fix/upgrade $@!& they design.

I wound up having to use a chisel. I didn't bang on it with a hammer, or chip the wood, I gently inserted it into the crack between the chassis and the back and pried slightly. It lifted the corner up about 1/16 of an inch, which was just enough to get the ball rolling. I think any kind of shim with a thin blade at the end of it would probably work for this. Be careful, the wood on the back is thin, so if you bend it too much it can break easily. All that needs to be done is to get a corner lifted slightly and from that point wiggle and pull on it till it comes out.

If it wasn't tight it would buzz. You would think they would allow for temp & humidity changes.

Once it came off it seemed to go back on and then come off again easily enough. Still a snug fit, but nothing like it was.
