Just received the new amp. Sounds great but the amp pops when turning the Stand By switch on and off. Is this normal?

Hi MCombest,

No, the popping isn't normal. I have the HRDvl 4x10 vII, and it doesn't pop when switching to standby. A couple of things come to mind, the ribbon cables for the tubes may be too close to the shielding on the back cover. The small ribbon cable for the output tubes should be away from the cover, and away from the other wires near it. You can remove the cover and move the ribbon cables inward away from the cover, but not too close to the tube sockets, being careful not to flex the cables at the board. Also, the wiring inside may need to be dressed, as some wires could be too close to each other, especially the high voltage leads from the transformer.

In either case, you need to be comfortable inside an amp, knowing about the lethal voltages inside, even when the amp is off. You might take it back to where you bought it and see if they can remedy the popping by dressing the leads and ribbon cables. Just a thought. :)

My BDRI pops occasionally when flipping the standby switch one way or another. Its not very loud and it doesn't seem to affect operation so it really doesn't seem to be worth trying to manipulate wires and cables to possibly correct it. I think one is more likely liable to cause damage to the amp by trying to dress a cable (particularly the ribbon cables) than a random pop is going to cause.
