Hi Matticusdav,

You didn't say what kind of music you want to play, or the needed volume (playing at home, gigging?). But one of my favorites is the Hot Rod Deluxe (HRDlx), and for $600 I think that it will be the most amp you can get for the money (I think that it's version II). The Peavey Classic 30 would be great also. Next I like the Blues Junior (BJr) NOS or Relic. I have a HRDlx and BJr and like them both Here are several decent amps for around $600. :)

Figure out what you want the new amp to do then fit those parameters around the six-hundred dollar budget and see what models might do the job.

+1 to what Arjay said.
Too many people buy an amp that's not right for them...figure out what the amp needs to do to suit your style first...and then which one can fit the bill.

I once had $600 and needed an amp. I found a used Deluxe Reverb reissue on craigslist and talked the guy down to $500. Happy times....
If I had $600 today, I would get a new Voc AC15C1 (sorry Fender).

I agree with the others. Tell us what you want out of your amp to help narrow the choices down. Whatever you choose, make sure it is a tube (valve) amp like all the suggestions so far :P

A used DRRI hands down. Or an Egnater Tweaker. I'd still steer clear of the Hot Rod series.

I'd also try a Peavey Classic 30 too. Great sounding and seriously reliable amp. Like I said, the HRDlx as well as the rest of the HRD series have their issues. You'll save yourself a lot of headaches down the road. My HRDlx was the most unreliable amp I've owned in 40+ years of playing.

I always recommend the Deluxe Reverb Re-issue. It just sounds so good, it's a one trick pony though, without pedals. As others have said, what you gonna do with this amp?

Mr 63supro

I have read many of your posts in this and other threads re amps and I came to the conclusion this guy knows what he is talking about!! To that end, for the past month I have been visiting music stores here in Canada trying out the Egnater products. A week ago I went out and brought home a new Egnater Tweaker.

The tones that come out of this thing are amazing, Now I am a relative newbie at this guitar player thing (3 years) but I know what sounds good to my ear and this amp is the real deal.

I also play thru a Peavey Delta Blues and I guess what I am trying to say is +1 on Egnater and Peavey.

and.... 63supro thanks so much for the tips, comments and advice. I was convinced I was going to get a Blues Junior before I started reading!!

regards
ginop

Thanks for the kind words. I've had my Egnater Rebel for a little over a year now and still love the tones I get out of it. I usually use two Egnater 112 cabs in bigger venues and it's great. It never gets buried in the mix. It's also been rock solid reliable.
The Peavey Delta Blues is also a great amp.
:D

I think the Deluxe Reverb Reissue would be a very good start in the right direction,if you can find a good used one....I dont't know how the prices are on those...others can help.
