Hey folks,

So I've gotten a 2002 Hot Rod Deluxe from a friend who has been experiencing from crackling issues. In investigating the PCB, I foremost saw one of the 22uF 500V capacitors leaking the electrolytic solution, and the 47uF 500V capacitor with some bulging, so while I don't know if replacement will solve the crackling issues, I do know that they need to be replaced ASAP.

In my flurry to get new capacitors, I bought a set of 22uF capacitors rated at 450V, which isn't the specs on the schematic, but in looking at the way that it works, I see the transformer supplies 440V.

So I guess my question ultimately is whether I can use the 450V capacitors, or if the normal operating voltage of the transformer could exceed 450V. I just don't know how transformers work and how accurate the step-up voltages are. In a perfect world, I would get the 500V capacitors, but I'm very budget-conscious and just wanted to see if some tech would advise me to wait and purchase 500V capacitors or if we can assume the 450s will work for now. I could probably get replacement caps in a month or two but like any good gearhead, I want to get on this ASAP! :)

Thanks for your advice.

Hi mobaar,

I just got through putting new caps in my 98 HRDlx, and I went with the 500V. I believe that Fender did use the 450V caps in some amps, but changed to the 500V because of failures. Mine has about 446V B+, so 450 would be cutting it too close for me. Since it is a fair job to remove the circuit board to replace the caps, I wouldn't want to have to do it twice in a short amount of time. Save yourself some time and headaches and go with the 500V, you'll be glad that you did (use a better brand than the IC that are there now). I'd replace all 3 of the 22s, and replace the 47 and add another 47 while your at it for better filtering in the first stage (I did), the holes are already there on the circuit board to add the second 47. At least the holes are there for the MIA, maybe the MIM have different layouts? It will be easy enough to see if there is an empty space that will accept another cap, to the left of the existing 47. :)

Edit: Definitely change your caps, but the "crackling" could be from bad solder joints and/or bad preamp/output tubes.

450V cap will be more stressed than 500V and will die in a shortest term than 500V. My advice is to buy 500V. 450V caps can be used in low wattage valve amps (for instance BJ ...), it will be easy to sell them I guess.

Thanks for the feedback. I've ordered the 500V caps and will be replacing them once they arrive. The 450s will go back up on eBay. The 22uF caps are F&T, which from everything I read is a step up (or more) than the IC. unfortunately, the 47uF cap is an IC.

I've looked at the tube joints and unless there's a significant error within the sockets themselves, the solder joints are solid and not cold. I should mention that the crackling issue came after a bit of water was taken on by the amp. I don't see any water damage or rusting on or around the PCB, but only saw the failing caps. It's not a typical cause of crackle but since we're dealing with water damage, i figure I had better cover the most obvious problems and divide and conquer.

Just as an update, as I mentioned earlier the 47uF cap I ordered was an IC one, but the one that arrived was F&T. Pleasant surprise! I'm still waiting on the 22uF caps but I'll update you all on it, and at least for documentation purposes, I'll let you know if it solves the issue (I really hope it does!).

Just providing an update, for the sake of future reference.

Re-capping the amp was the perfect solution. After the recap job I had some oscillation happening. Applying the rules of proper lead dress took care of that in no time. It sounds absolutely amazing.

Thanks for your help. I held off for the 500V capacitors and I'm honestly glad I did.

Good job mobaar! Always glad to hear about other happy HRDlx owners like myself. It is also good to have another tech to contribute here on the forums. Thanks for sharing your experience. :)
