I just recently purchased the Frontman 65r and I really do like it. It's loud, looks great, the clean channel is beautiful and it feels really well built.

BUT..

I am having a ton of trouble getting my distortion pedals to sound right. I am using a Grunge pedal (which I love) but it either comes out way too hissy or it sounds like its underwater, I cant seem to find a middle ground.

I have a feeling it has something to do with the 65r's lack of a mid eq in the clean channel. The pedal I am using has only high/low eq also. Does anyone have any pointers? I'd really appreciate any input.

That being said, I am really loving the amp, thanks fender!!

Yeah it is the Digitech Grunge. I was also thinking about just buying a EQ pedal to make up for the lack of MID on the amp. Ya think that would be worth messin with?

You said, "I am having a ton of trouble getting my distortion pedals to sound right." The key word is PEDALS. Are all of them doing this? or did you mean only the Grunge?

If just the Grunge, then you have a defective pedal. The input stage is not matching the output which is why you have hiss or the "muddled" sound. Did you drop the unit? Spilled something on it? Possible bad cord from guitar to pedal choking off your signal. Is the Grunge your only box? If not, where is it in your signal path to the amp?

Does you guitar sound fine straight into the amp? If so, again, it is the pedal.
Quick test is to try the Grunge in another amp. Buying an EQ or compressor will not fix the problem, but just cost you money. For the cost of buying another Grunge, EQ, and Compressor, you can buy a decent Multi-Effects unit with those features and more.
