Hoping you all can help me out with this.

I currently own a Hot Rod Deville 410 and I'm thinking of upgrading to a Super Reverb reissue. Wondering if that's a smart choice, or if I'm spending a lot of money for a little upgrade in tone.

I can't find a Super in town to play which makes it hard to A/B the two. And I can't really discern a difference in tone from Youtube videos.

The reviews are even harder to figure. As a lot of folks just love to rip on the Deville and call the Hot Rods the most horrible amps in the world and think the classic Fenders are like jacking into Jesus.

So I'm hoping someone here has had some objective experiences with these amps and can help me justify the $$$.

If it helps, I play a bit of blues, rock, hard rock, some Sabbath or AC/DC now and then. The standards really. Mostly this is for home use with Strats and Gibsons. I'd appreciate any help you could provide.

How is your back? Seriously the Super Reverb is one of the greatest amps Fender has ever built. It is really heavy though and if you're going to lug it around to gigs you'll quickly grow tired of that. The Super in my opinion is a way better amp than the Hot Rods but at my age (56) I can't deal with the weight anymore.

I re-read your post and saw that you said it would be mostly used at home, so weight might not be as much of an issue. On the other hand in order to get some breakup with he Super you're going to have to crank it pretty good which might not be what you want at home. I would also look at a reissue Deluxe Reverb, in my opinion the all around ideal amp.

+1

The Princeton Reverb re-issue is also worthy of consideration. It might be even more appropriate than a DRRI for home use.

Excellent points about the Deluxe.

I certainly can't dismiss the Deluxe from consideration. Especially given my usage. But there's something about the sound of the 4x10s that I like over a single cone.

So now I guess it becomes a question of what's more important:
Being able to naturally push the Deluxe at lower volumes, or having that 4x10 sound.

Heavy is the hand that holds the Strat.

I have in my home studio a 59 bassman ltd with huge upgrades to the tubes and speakers and a 65 DRRI with only tubes upgraded.

The 4x10 has a tiny advantage in the clean department, the deluxe blows the bassman away in overdrive.

The deluxe is the very best over the counter Fender out there, the sound is full, no boxiness at all.

The Hot Rod series are not even in the same league as the DRRI or SRRI. IMO, Either amp would be a huge improvement over your DeVille. YMMV

I finally managed to find a Super Reverb to plug into this afternoon and I have to say – wow. I really didn't think the difference would be so vast, but I was blown away. Very different from my Deville.

Might have to A/B with the Deluxe and see what gets the most goosebumps.

Among "new" amps, the blackface re-issues are in a league all their own.

Absolutely ! Better input jacks, Tube sockets ect.....

Tube sockets that are chassis mounted not directly mounted to a flimsy pcb board.

Build quality aside, they are made in the USA, a big plus for me and the tone quality is far better too.

Thanks for all the information. Really, really helpful.

I decided to put an order in for a Super Reverb.

I really love the Deluxe Reverb. It's a classic for a reason, but to me there is just something about the Super Reverb sound that fit like a glove.

Looking forward to hearing how my guitars sound through it.

You won't regret it for sure ! The Super is a sweet amp, its just a beast to move around.

Again I am strongly in favor of the 4x10 sound, nothing sounds so dynamic a single 12 can't do all that.

But for its single 12 limitations, the 65 DRRI is one bad (good) sounding amp !

Hmmm, maybe I should find me a 4x10 cab for my DRRI? Or, maybe build a DRRI 4x10 combo...
