I just purchased my first Fender amp. It is the Blues Jr. I found a 'crack' in the black vinyl at the top, front corner. Probably happened at the factory... Not sure if it goes into the wood or not. Is the wood a press board? I got a small discount for showing the crack in the store; but am now a little worried. I am sure that it is nothing that some cyanoacrylate couldn't fix if needed. Seems relatively strong. Has anyone ever had this happen on their amp.? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

It should have been a huge discount, a big chunk of value is in the integrity of the cab.
If the tolex is cracked there is a good chance the wood may be also.
If you didnt get 100 dollar discount or ever plan on trading or selling the amp.
Take it back !!!!

I don't think Fender even uses Tolex anymore. It's Black Textured Vinyl Covering. The Tolex would cover a multitude of sins. I agree trading damaged goods for a discount doesn't make any sense. The cabinets on the whole HRD series are pretty cheap to begin with. They're only medium-density fiberboard otherwise known as MDF. It's compressed sawdust and wood chips. It's cheap garbage without being damaged. Anymore I won't get anything but Baltic Birch or quality plywood cabs. If you can, take it back.

I took it back and got the III. Very confusing when faced with a broken II and choosing between a couple of I's and a III... It should be the best. I really liked the chrome placard though on the II... Thanks for the input; I agree with it.

I find it funny that now the HRD series are referred to I,II and III's.
To my knowledge they didn't have a number until now. I think the GDec started that even though they didn't have a I or II with these either. I'm still would have went with the DRRI, but good luck with your new amp. Just curious, did you get to try the old and new Jr side by side? Just wondering what you thought about them.

Yes, side by side. I checked for hum noise too. The III was quieter; otherwise, I couldn't really tell a sound difference; not there, not with that amount of time. Seems that they are all good. Just wish the first wasn't split, cut, or cracked... Perhaps I will keep all posted as to how the III sounds.

Your probably better off with the newer model as far as reliability goes. I wish you good luck with it. It's my understanding that they finally made the PCB's a little better as well as a few other things.

Unbelievable, I think that the II version, (somewhat damaged cabinet/vinyl that I returned), sounded better: no mud, more distortion with the volume up and Master volume down. That is, sounded better at low volumes. I play late at night when everyone else is sleeping... Why change anything that would change the sound of something that already sounds great?

Because the Blues Jr is one of the most frequently modded amps in the HRD series. If you want the "real" Fender tone look for something something with 6L6 or 6V6 power tubes or something in the reissue series. Lots of people who own the Blues Jr find the need to tweak the amp to get what they want out of it. Including Fender. That's why I always recommend using your own guitar when trying out an amp and going either early when the store opens or later in the evening. I bet the HRD III series came about because of all the complaints and mods being done to these amps. I fixed all my problems with my HRDlx when I sold it and bought an amp I truly like that's reliable, well built and designed and the only mod I did to it was put a NOS JAN Phillips 5751 preamp tube in to cut the available gain a little.

If you're unhappy, take that one back too. A little hint, try a DRRI or an Egnater Rebel 20 or an Egnater Tweaker. They're a lot more tone, reliability, versatility and value for your money.

I'm with Supro all the way on the DRRI, You can pick up a used one online for not much more than a new Blues jr. and you'll have three times the amp !

thats a 65 deluxe reverb reissue in case your not familiar with the short name.

I want to try one of the newer vht speacial 6 amps too.

I have a vintage 6X10 cab out in the garage full of old low wattage alnicos that might sound awesome with a vht head and some tube swapping.

I saw the VHT Special 6 and I think it's worth a look. After playing a Twin for over 30 years, I'm really enjoying the low wattage amps. Serious fun. The low wattage Egnaters are my new kick. Ny Rebel is the first amp in ages that makes me want to play all the time. I play with musicians who use boutique rigs that are totally blown away by the Rebel 20. If my cash flow goes well, I might build a Tweed 5E3 just for some fun. I need a new acoustic first.

Thanks, I didn't know what DRRI stood for; now I do. Yes, it sounds like a great amp. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how the new BJrIII sounds compared to its predescesor?

I returned the Blues-Junior III and got the previous model. (There is no I and II; the II is the same as the I; California made Fender put on a protective grill over the tubes opening in the back. It was a %100 agreement upon four sets of ears that the original Blues-Junior sounded better. This better sound was contributed by the original, Fender re-issue vintage speaker (Made by Eminence). The sound is more classic, more defined and exact; not blended or muddy or cheap amp sound (with the gain high). We did a 'A/B' test; side by side. That's my take; I am now happy. :D
