Happy to join the forum, wish it was for a better reason. My hot rod deluxe hasn't properly functioned in some time. At a show a year ago, it just quit giving volume. There is a minimal amount of volume on the clean channel, but its distorted and really quiet. The gain channels have no sound at all. I recently replaced all the 12ax7 with a matched set off JJ's to see if this would resolve this issue, and it did not. I have reseated all the tubes, and checked to make sure they were glowing in standby mode. The amp turns on without fail, I just can't get any sound. Looking for some advice from someone who may have had the same issue. Thanks for any replies in advance. I got a show tonight, so I wont be in the forums until tomorrow. The amp is about ten years old, made in the USA Hot Rod Deluxe. I bought a replacement amp, but would love to have this one as a backup.

Thanks
Dan

There a simple test to know if the problem comes from the preamp section or the power amp section: Instead of pluging your guitar jack in the normal imput on the left side, plug the jack in "power amp in" input. Let us know if you have normal sound.

With 10 years old, there is a good probability that the supply capacitors are "weak" and a lot of bad solders on the PCB, even drifted resistors. Do you hear "hum" ? Do you smell something ?

If you have re-tubed the power amp, it is necessary to adjust the bias. Let us know if it has been done. If you changed the phase inverter valve (V3 12ax7/ECC83), verify that you put a mached one (these 2 points should not produce a lake of sound on clean and no sound on drive).

That's a great idea Tissan. The power supply caps in the high voltage DC supply are notorious for leaking and failing. Try Tissan's advice first, and if no luck, look at the high-voltage DC supply (B+) and see if you have about 440VDC at CP18 on the circuit board. With power off and caps discharged, you may also want to check your output transformer primary and secondary for continuity to be sure that it hasn't opened. It may be something else, but you can rule out things to zero in on the problem. You should disconnect the output transformer secondary leads from the circuit board to check the secondary, because of the shorting speaker jack and/or speaker connected.

I'm not saying that these are likely the problem or not, but process of elimination. :)

You said you replaced all the preamp tubes, did you ever replace the power tubes? The input jacks are pretty shabby in these things too. I'd also check the speaker jack too. I'd do this before getting all into everything else. If you never changed the power tubes, I'd look there first. Then look at the power supply caps.
