The Tung-Sol's are indeed very good glass, easily besting the GT's and various brands coming from the PRC.

As well, "TAD" (aka Tube Amp Doctor) has just announced a new line of 6V6's that are -- allegedly -- a sonic match to the revered and legendary blackplate RCA's. They're blackplates (of course!), with brown bakelite bases, correct halo getters, and the vintage-spec bottle. They too look suspiciously like Tung-Sols. They're a bit pricey (£21.50 each) and I haven't tried any yet but they do look promising.

Yikes !! Thats like $30.00 each US Dollar.

I'll pass

Tip for all you tube scroungers, pick up every $5 to 10 dollar organ you can find and scrap it, I've found tons of sweet 12AX7's, 6V6's and 5881, 6L6's in them.

Not to mention a bunch of cool Jensen (Chicago) 12" speakers

You will love the tone !

A 5751 NOS in V-1 will do a lot to inprove your sound also, I used a Tung-sol Reissue 12AX7 in V-2 and V-4.

I'm Blessed to have a pretty good stock of nos 12AX7's and 12AY7, 12AT7 ect.....
A neighbor was an antique radio collector repair guy and he got out of it and sold me all of his tubes.
What is most amazing is that for me the RI Tung-sol stuff has been my favorite.

I did have a pair of RCA 6V6GT's that I sold off and now I wish I had them back.

Hey blues bondsman,
In looking at used DRRI...anything to be particularly on the watch for?
I'd like to buy new but $ are at a premium right now and so I'm looking at used. Outside of cosmetics, I'm not sure how to tell if a amp has been modded beyond recognition!

Thanks,
-T

You don't hear of people modding the DRRI's much at all.
Pretty sweet amps right out of the box.

The only thing some folks do is the mod to allow reverb on both channels and some people clip the bright cap on the reverb trem channel.

I have picked up three of them on local online sale sites and had absolutely no trouble.

tyronne: I got a very nice DRRI from Guitar Center for a good price (great prices on these are hard to come by). The only thing that I would recommend (other than the usual) is to make sure the Vibrato/Tremolo works like you want it too. In the GC when I demoed the used DRRI, there was the usual amp volume competition. I did not notice the faint ticking/pulsing that the amp was making with the Tremolo engaged and no sound thru the amp. It is there at any volume, and even there if you are plugged in to the clean channel. It appears to be a symptom of the vintage and the reissue amps, but not all amps do this evidently (something about the opto-isolater that makes the Tremolo). It is not noticeable in a live situation, but if you miced it, or played in a studio, the sound would be distracting. Just a heads up to monitor for this possiblility.

Do you have a pic of the new amps you've fixed up?

I have not tried to fix this. I did an internet search, and the options range from moving the wires around to cutting and soldering. I'm too lazy (and afraid) and not likely to do either. Here is a thread I opine within that had some additional info:

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... sc&start=0

Bottom line: get one that doesn't make any noise, and you won't have to worry about it. But remember, this amp has the voice of angels. It is so pure and honest, I just love it.

I still have a hard time getting used to the contrast from the normal and tremolo channel (brightness)

So anyone had one speaker that just flat out improved the overall sound of a DRRI ?

Getting rid of the italian jensen's was the very best thing I could do for my bassman, wondering what might happen with a good weber in the DRRI ???

Your first comment; I did a simple mod and now have reverb and tremolo in the normal channel without the bright cap. It took 20 minutes to complete.

Re speakers: My DRRI came with a Celestion Alnico Blue. It is amazing. It is very loud. I use humbuckers in my Carvin guitar and can get stage vol loud and stay clean. This is the best speaker I've had in 43 years of playing.

Rock On, Andy

I too have modded my DRRI to have vibrato/reverb in the Normal channel. This way I can plug in to the Normal channel and bypass the bright cap in the Vibrato channel. This was the best mod ever. I love this amp even more now. With OD pedals at low volumes I got the fizzy harshness that everyone talks about. This mod completely remedies this issue.
