I just bought a Blues Deluxe (USA) and although I love the sound of it, I was wondering if there is a way to get more headroom out of the clean channel. The tubes appear to be all original GT. Will a set of JJ 12AX7's do the trick? Do I need to consider a speaker replacement?

change the v3 position tube (closest to power tubes) to a 12at7. it will even give more headroom to the o.d. chanel. jj's will do fine. just get one that has matched triodes. most tube stores have them.

Are you talking about dynamid headroon (the ability to deliver higher power for a short transient period) or max amplitude before cliping (or too much harmonics)?

Fender Blues Deluxe-Deville Max Headroom
Price: $66.25
Description: This kit will work for both the original and reissue amps and uses a matched pair of the JJ 6L6GC's in a moderate grade for headroom along with an ECC81 for V1 to drop the gain in the front end, an ECC81 for V2 to drop the gain in the drive channel and a balanced ECC83S for the phase inverter in V3. This will get maximum power and headroom for you Jazz and Country players.

Before you spend money on new tubes, have you checked the amp's bias to make sure it's within correct range? That might clean things up.

Quick easy answer..

Get a compressor. You can push up the perceived amount of headroom dramatically. The peaks that cause the breakup are flattened down, and everything else comes up.

+1

Likewise, a speaker change is probably not going to help deliver more clean headroom (unless your amp currently has some 20-watt POS installed).

Installing a quality 12AT7 in the V1 position will drop the total gain available in the clean channel, which will deliver a perceived cleaner tone to the phase inverter. It may however reduce the maximum available volume when using that channel.

Thanks for all the input! Now could someone clarify where V1,V2,and V3 are in relation to the power tubes.

Looking from behind on the amp from right to left:

V1: input tube
V2: additional drive tube
V3: phase inverter

V5: powertube 1
V6: powertube 2

Greetings
Martin
