I guess its all in the Ear of the beholder... Myself had purchased a set of JJs, and have yet to install them in my Hot Rod. I biased the original GTs at about 87... they sound great and their holding up! I expected them to fail, then I was to put in the JJs, but like I said they sound great...

And "Sovtek" is not really a Russian manufacturer, either. There are several Russian manufacturers making "6L6GC-type" tubes. I'm most familiar with Reflektor and Svetlana.

Here's a site that has the original manufacturer's symbols, usually stencilled onto each tube. The era in which the tube are made plays a role in how good they are. Russian mil spec tubes of the 1970-80's TEND to be better than later issues. Some of the 1950-60's tubes are considered classics (like the 6pi23pi-EV).

Yep, I agree with you Bill. I have a set of GT6L6GE(ca.2001) that are still strong(1200hrs or so) and still within 2-3ma of each other. Also have a set of GT6L6S(ca.2003) that are plenty strong(over a 1000hrs) and are within 2ma of each other. At that time, the "S" stood for Slovakia(Tesla-JJ), the St. Petersburg Svetlana's were the "R2" marked tubes. Now a days, the QC seems to be a crap shoot. If you get the good ones, then yeah ! It's very important that there is a solid return policy when purchasing any tube from any vendor, regardless of the brand. The only GT pre amp tubes that I have are two balanced triodes(12AT7, 12AX7), from what was then, their SAG department. Don't know the country of origin, but they are used for testing phase inverter circuits. They have very low hrs, but are excellent for that application. Art
