Ok, I've decided to upgrade from my blues jr to a hot rod deville, but which speaker configuration, 4x10 or 2x12? I've decided on the older II version instead of the newer III. I play blues and classic rock. I will be ordering online, so I can't demo to try them out.

I own a Hot Rod DeVille 410 (USA version, so this is version "1").

The 4 10" speakers have a faster response in my ears. They produce a brighter tone but they're less of bottom end.

The 2x12" of my friend has a little more bass but my 4x10" sounds brighter and the sound spreads better into the room.

I think the 410 version is the better one but it depends on everyones own sound opinion.

I added a Hot Rod Enclosure 112 which fits perfectly under the 410 (the 212 version is slightly wider). That gives a lot of bottom end in addition to the better hearing because the amp stands now about 40cm higher.

Greetings
Martin

Thanks for the tips, so the 4x10s are a bit brighter, so I'm assuming it would compliment humbuckers more than the 2x12? Which weights more?

It is brighter, exactly!

I don't know if humbuckers sound better through the 10" version. I like the drive channel more in connection with the 10"s.

Fender says in the manual:

DeVille 410 = 22,5 kg
DeVille 212 = 24,2 kg

That can't be true: My 410 weights about 29 kg, and I think the 212 version of my friend weights less.

Either will work, but as a rule of thumb 10's are better for country/clean and 12's are better for blues and rock.

I would suggest the 212.

I was exactly where you are until today....Before I continue (and let you know what I decided)I want to let you know that I agree with your decision to go with an earlier series Deville. I purchased the new 4x10 Series III Deville and wasn't happy with the added mid range in the overdrive channel. Some people may like that newer sound , but I find the creamier-sustaining sound of the older series an important consideration.

Going back to deciding between the 2 Older Devilles: 2x12 vs 4x10:
It comes down to this- Do you want a creamier-fuller sound (2x12) or a brighter/more headroom sound (4x10) ? In my opinion, you can always make the 2x12 sound brighter (with presence, EQ and even wah left on) but it's much harder to make the 4x10 sound as full (yes you can add Bass on the EQ, but won't get as creamy of a sound/fullness- due to 4 smaller speakers vs 2 larger one's capabilities). I prefer a guitar/amp's tonal range over headroom.

Even though you will order your amp online, I encourage you to go to your local music stores and try them all right next to each other as I did (all equal settings/volume and play the same riff on each amp back to back).

I chose the older series Deville 2x12 (over all III series and older 4x10) and never looked back appreciating the differences I heard first hand. In case you are wondering what type of music I play-blues and rock (use SRV Strat and a '96 Lonestar Strat). What type of music do you play? What type of guitar are you using?

Best of luck to you and I know you can't go wrong either way-Fender makes the best amps and what ever your ears prefer should be the only deciding factor in the end.

Thank you so much for your informative input. You made it so much easier for me to decide and what to look for. I play mostly blues and classic rock and I play mainly strats, but also play with Les Pauls and SGs. I'm want an amp that would work well with these guitars. I like a chunky sound, but also has a tight bottom end and crisp highs. So it looks like the 2x12 deville maybe my amp. I better order soon, as they older devilles maybe in limited supply to make way for the new hot rod IIIs.

I'm sure you've already researched this, but from these forums I've seen posts indicating there are some challenges/issues with the Hot Rod series that can either be addressed through mods or by buying another amp. I'd suggest using google at large or on this site:

"Fender Hot Rod" site:www.fender.com/community

where whatever is in quotes will be searched only on the Fender Forums. Usually this works much better than the internal search tool.

Good luck and let us know what you end up getting.

Well, I ended up purchasing the older Deville 2x12. I was able to compare it with the 4x10 and also played the newer version III. The 2x12 sounded tighter more crisp, snapier and a bit more responsive with and rounder bottom end sound which I like.

I have the US HRD 410 and am looking to trade for a BD 410. I recently purchased a BDRI 112 after selling my BJr and am very pleased with that amp so far. :?:
