Someone always brings up the Dumble. He also had access to something like 32 amps during the recording of In Step. He started with a Vibroverb and a Marshall Club & Country. The Marshall was replaced by Super Reverbs in '81 I think. For the majority of SRV's career his live set up was 2 Vibroverbs and 2 Super Reverbs. The VV and SR's where also highly modified by Rene so they could run as clean as possible at the volume Stevie played at without blowing up. It would be darn near impossible to replicate his rig.

Everything considered, when someone asks what's the easiest way to get the SRV tone, blackface circuit for the tone and 12" speakers for some fullness.

I saw an interview with Rene,I guess it was,who recalled seeing SRV for the first time up in D.C. or somewhere and he said he played great but sounded like crap,he convinced Stevie that he could improve his sound by leaps and bounds....I guess he did.
That's what most people miss, when you're in the league with people like SRV,you've got people just waiting in line to get near you for one reason or another, some want to help, but most have a personal agenda behind it.

Well the reason the Dumbles are always brought up is from the time he recorded Texas Flood ,he always had some around.Everyone associates him with the Super reverb or the Vibroverb, but really he used alot of different amps, but the twin, vibroverb and Dumble steel singer was what he used most.

If you ever heard a Dumble up close and personal, you would know why they're mentioned.

A BF with 15" is even better :D

There's no denying he used lots of different amps... on some of the live recordings I can hear the difference in tone when he switches amps in the middle of a song or when he's using the Vibratone, but I couldn't tell you what amp is what. I found this article, not sure how accurate it is but there are pics to show what gear was being used on stage...

Dumble Amps are some of the most sought after amps in the world by some of the most discriminating players. As good as Fender amps are, Dumble Amps are incredibly different and complex in the tone department. It's not always a Fender. Here's another shocker that's a little off topic. Eric Johnson said in a Gibson interview that he recorded "Cliffs of Dover" with a Gibson ES335

Remember, the player defines the tone just as much as any guitar or amp. I've heard many a great rig sound like arse in the hands of an incompetent player.

I've never owned a Dumble amp,but I have read from some sources that some are not that great, mainly some that went overseas....but's that's just what some amp guys said in a book I have.
But...they also said the ones that are right are unbelievable.
Everyone praises SRV for being one of the greatest, and rightly so,but he had off times also,I saw a short clip of him playing the National Anthem before a ballgame somewhere, using a slide and the part I saw sounded terrible,he had to have been messed up,he just shrugged his shoulders after like,"oh well".

Of course the greats messed up sometimes, that's what makes them mortal. On one of the newer Hendrix CD there's a song where half way through the solo it's like Jimi forgets what key he's in... first time I heard it I was like WTF? If I can find it I'll let you know what song it is.

I have never figured out how Jimi stayed in key or even remembered where he was,I think I've read that at Monterey he had taken several hits of acid before the show...that's incredible in itself.
Carlos Santana said at Woodstock he had taken peyote or something like that and it hit him right before he walked onstage and the neck of the guitar was moving around like a snake....he sounded great.
I have a hard enough time staying in time and remembering chords without that.

Dont forget Stevie spend a bit of his career high on coke. There is some stuff that was bad.He ended up doing a tour in Europe where he actually fell off the stage and was injured.Eventually he got help, but some of the stuff on "Live Alive " wasnt from some of his stellar moments to be sure.

The Vox AD 30s to 120s and the VT series all have realistic models that represent the best of Fender,Marshall,Vox,Mesa Boogie and even Dumble Overdrive Specials and others as well as great effects. You can pick up used AD 30s for the $200 price range and have at least 16 of your favourite dream amps at your disposal.I paid just $400 for a 2 year old AD 120 VTH that had cost over $1,200 new and it was in mint condition.
