hey anthony

thanks for stopping in on the fender forum. it was your videos that brought me to buy a BJr. (ricksconnected)

i like those amps. the tone is amazing at lower volumes like you stated. in a post above i suggested the sansamp as well, again from watching your videos and hearing the tone your getting from them.
limited cash flow, the blues jr is a good choice.
plenty of funds the sansamp is killer.

Thanks for all of your comments so far! I have been given quite a few good ideas to work with! One thing that I may do is just go back to the Blues Jr. and use it with a THD Hot Plate, which my guitar teacher suggested. It drives the amp to the max, you dime the volume, and it will produce massive amounts of overdriven tube sludge (if that's what you want). It was really great, and the more I think about it, the more I miss the Blues Jr. used in this way I also used it with a 4x10 Ampeg cab, which made it loud enough to practice with a full band of another guitar, bass and drummer.

Careful - while it will do exactly what you want, your tubes will wear faster that way.

Yep, it draws a lot of current too, but since I no longer own that amp, it isn't my problem anymore! :P

You can get pretty close with a Blues Jr, Boss Blues driver, E flat tuning, and 11s and still not get thrown out of the neighborhood due to the volume.

You don't need 13's tuned a down a half step to sound like SRV. A DRRI and a Tube Screamer will get you close. A word of caution, 13's can do some serious damage to your fretting hand if you don't work up to them. Even then it's a crapshoot. I was damaging my tendons using 12's at standard pitch before SRV was around. Also remember, you'll need a complete setup, more than likely a new or at least a re-cut nut. Just not worth the aggravation for the slight difference in tone. Most of his sound was in his technique anyway.

The Peavey DB115, although a great amp (I owned one for 6 years), seemed to me to be a "smoother" sound (think Allman Brothers), whereas My BJr NOS tweed with the Jensen can get a lot closer to the sound you seem to be looking for. As has been said earlier, it does blow the tolex version away...well worth the extra dough. The DRRI is also a GREAT amp, but it is hard to play at low volumes sometimes. Seems like it's either not loud enough and when you try to turn it up just a bit it gets too loud for that midnite rendez-vous with your Strat while the wife is sleeping....can't find that balance point. My BJr fits this bill perfectly, though, and I play through it all the time now. I have no regrets at all.

The power difference between a 15 watt and 22 watt amp is pretty negligible. I find the volume transition is smoother with the DRRI. Also if your looking for a true Fender tone, the DRRI is more like it. Just seems like EL84's don't belong in a Fender amp, they're a bit too aggressive. Notes will "bloom" with pushed 6V6 power tubes. The DRRI is also a more versatile amp due to it's two "real" channels with separate EQ for each channel.
Not that I'm into the whole Strats with Hats thing. I like SRV's playing, but you have so many people trying to sound like him it just gets old. I have a hard time listening to SRV's stuff being covered poorly and with thin sounding clone tone. If you ever heard SRV in person, his tone was monstrous.

If you want SRV type tone you need an amp with the blackface circuit and a 12" speaker minimum. Playing with the amp EQ will do more for the tone then the gauge of strings you use.

Not really. SRV used all kinds of amps and guitars. Remember he played Dano's too. He sounded like himself regardless of what amp or guitar he played. I surprised no one put out a modeling pedal like Clapton's, and Hendrix.

Good points supro. If I remember reading an article about Stevie, his fingers were tore up pretty bad from using big strings. He is always thought of as using a Super Reverb, but he used all kinds of amps.He used Marshalls alot as well as Dumbles too.

+1 Stevie Ray was Stevie Ray regardless of what he played.

IMO the words "small amp" and SRV should never be used together :D
