Hey everyone, i love the amps sound for the most part but i just ant seem to find the sound im looking for and its really killing my bands rehearsal sound.

The Problem im having is that when i play my guitar unplugged it actually sounds better than when its plugged in, theres more sustain, when i strum a chord every note is clear ( i switch from strumming to picking during chords a lot and once ive strummed and go to pick a note the note is unheard.

The sound im looking for is a really nice clean tone like John frusciante's, the middle overdrive to be somthing like jonny greenwoods sound when he is hammering his chords but can still bring single notes through and then for a really heavy distorted sound for chorus but still be able to pick single notes aswell.

I know a lot the above probably doesnt make much sense but right now it just sounds so muddy,no sustain and when i strum a chord all i here is bass despite turning mid and treble up.

and im also looking to see how i can have the clean sound at the same level as the distortion coming in and out of the choruses but the distortion still having an impact when selected for chorus.

ive noticed if i put the clean level above three it starts to become a little overdriven sounding is this normal ?

and the red light bulb goes off and on a lot.

thanks for any advice given.

i forgot to mention when im playing im sole guitarist so i play similiary to johnny marr and graham coxon of blur is strum and pick a lot within chords and im looking to do this without havign to be completly clean sounding.

so basically i sound a million times better unplugged than when through an amp, my riffs and finger picking sounds esp when i play hybrid style doesnt sound nearly as good, and it even tempts me to play acoustic lol

Hi fendertelemusik,

Are you using some effects pedals? If so, some pedals are better in the effects loop and some are better into the input jack. Have you tried both places for your effects? If you aren't using any pedals, you might want to try something like a drive or distortion pedal instead of the gain channel in the amp. I have a HRDlx and I don't use the drive channel very much, I can get a much better tone using effects and the clean channel. The new HRDlx, version III, is reported to have improved the drive channel in the amp, but I haven't heard one other than the Fender website promo.

Also, have you tried input 2, and/or the bright switch, presence control? You should be able to get a very bright sound (less muddy). Mine seems to sound best on the clean channel with bass and treb at about 5 - 6 and mid down to 4, then kick in a pedal for distortion.

The light just may be loose in the socket (bayonet type) or needs replaced. It's difficult to seat those type of bulbs, really need a small suction cup to make it easier as the bulb pushes in then turns to lock in.

Hi as Shimmilou mentioned above, all good things to check into. You didn't tell us how old the amp is, if its got tons of hours on it, maybe a tube change is in order. The other thing is the guitar, do you have the same issue with another amp? if so, I would check the pick up height, and if it has active pups, try changing the battery...

Just some ideas

Bill

Maybe using a volume pedal or your volume control on your guitar when playing your lead may help. Just another idea. I use my Fender volume/tone pedal a lot.

I almost have the same problem here. It is much better to play it unplugged than plugged. I already checked the pedals and the amp. I really don't know if the problem lies with my guitar or with my equipments.

OK... try pulling all the EFX pedals out of the circuit. Plug the guitar directly into the amp. Same dulling tone with no sustain? I'd first suspect tired input stage (first 12AX7 tubes or V1 and V2). Prolly be nice to buy a few 12AT7 and 12AX7 and rotate them into each socket, in-by-one, and check for tonal changes.

Finally, maybe even test the power tubes. Rebias any replacement to specs.

If the amp comes to life without the pedal board, you may need to go through each pedal and check for dying batteries or poor jumper connections.

HTH. Good luck!

Guys, this post is a year old. I doubt if the OP has been waiting for a response for all this time. Note the one post, and nothing since.
