I don't understand because some post ago you said:

"Installed components in sequence that you suggested and gave power. All are re-soldered except Q12 and Q14 and fuse did not blow. Also Return effects loop jack gives nice clean sound."

Let me know.

What I'm wondering is, has the original poster crossed the "$30 threshold" in parts, time, and aggravation that it would've required to just send this busted piece of crap back to the seller and instead bought something that worked right out of the shipping carton?

Color me "curious"

What good did that post do? But anyway, I got a 12" Fender speaker for $50 and have learned a lot about circuits and Fender amps that will pay off in the future. Also this is a very good sounding amp when it is working right, and my friend from France knows what he is talking about. One last thing, I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery, so I have way more time than money right now and sure don't have $500 for a new amp.

Of all of the components that you instructed me to remove and test, all have been re-soldered in place except for the Q12 and Q14. I should have those in tomorrow. The sound was clean from the "return effects loop" at the time of that post, but now is distorted. I get the same sound from all settings. I will check the board to make sure that I have not caused a short with the solder.

Five hundred bucks......

Um......yeah.

Sure.

Whatever you say.

http://tucson.craigslist.org/msg/1945542437.html

And I've seen a half a dozen of these amps for sale on Ebay since the day you made your initial post -- all of them for around two bills or less.

What good did my post do?

Elementary......everyone needs a periodic object lesson now and then about the "law of diminishing return".

But best of luck however it turns out -- I hope you don't end up like the "Ancient Mariner" (with a dead albatross around your neck).

I thought you meant a new amp. As I said I am learning a lot and I have the time. I paid $50 and the 12" Fender speaker looks good. You could probably rebuild this amp for me in your sleep, but I get the feeling you wouldn't.

Honestly, I'd help if I could. But that amp's architecture is not something I'm real familiar or comfortable working with. In any case, Tissan seems to be the right man for the job at hand. I merely don't wish to see you end up buried in this exercise if things turn severely "south". I suppose the $50 you paid for the amp is not terribly prohibitive. And it will, in the end, be satisfying to bring the amp back to life. Apologies if you thought my candid question masked a malicious motive.

I have received and installed Tip 147 into Q14 and TIP 142 into Q12. I also found an open on the circuit board and fixed it. The sound is good except for reverb. It sounds like a lot of old springs and then I get the ringing feedback. However I left the amp in on in Normal mode (not Tube Drive) and the amp shut down. It clicked and no power. I unplugged it for a few minutes and plugged it in and it is is good. No blown fuse. Then after about 3 minutes the power goes out again. So I did nothing and in a few minutes the power comes back and it is playing again. It does this over and over like it shuts off to avoid overheating.

So it seems that at least two problems. The bad reverb (which may be a bad coil) and the power problem.

There are a lot of progress. Don't let your hands fall down, I will continue to support you in the investigation for the reverb. 8)

Where is located the Open track ?

Thank you. I was about to give up. The copper track had curled off of the board and was not making contact at one of the pins on the new input jack.

For the reverb, it could be a problem with the tank (spring), it remebers me my Marshall jmc800 combo I bough in 83 or 4, it was the reverb tank. Have you got another amps ? If yes, try another tank (reverb-pan). Another test you could do is to connect a music equipment like a CD player on the input RCA wire (the one that re-input the signal from the reverb-panl), a pot is welcome to level adaptation. Test the reverb pot if it is OK, the there is a huge chance that the reverb-pan is failed. For the ramdom supply check soldering joints. Make sure you don't create short circuit, now you 're a electronic padawan.

I have a Frontman 25R. It looks completely different. If I take a reading on the two wire connecting the tank would that help? Of course you would have to tell me what setting for my meter.

Usually the reverb tank is located on the bottom of the wood cabinet under the black plastic.

Not easy measurements with a multimeter, it an AC signal (an oscilloscope can measure it but you also need a AC generater)

By the way, I'm not sure that you can put the tank from Frontman to the Roc, if you try, make sure the volume is low;

I think on the Frontman 25R it is inside mounted on the chassis with the circuit board. It has a different connection also.
