Before I go any further are you saying that I should order a TIP 147? I can get a TIP 142 here locally but I do not think it will work will it?

If I well understand, please confirm, Q14 is dead and Q14 is a TIP147 a PNP transistor;

Please do not put a TIP142 instead that is the complementary NPN
type!

Before resolder power transistors:
check Q9 and Q10, CR33/CR34 and CR25 to CR32.
If all are OK, supply just to know if the short disapears

Let me know, I'm waiting.

Yes Q14 is dead and Q14 is a TIP147 a PNP transistor. I will not use a TIP142. Should I get the TIP147 before I go on to "check Q9 and Q10, CR33/CR34 and CR25 to CR32. If OK, reconnect only Q11 and Q13 and supply just to know if the short desappear" as you suggest?

Well, I breathe again :D

Protocole:

1. Check Q9 and Q10, CR33/CR34 and CR25 to CR32 + CR35 and CR36

Let me know

2. Supply to know if the short has desappeared

Let me know

3. If OK, reconnect only Q11 and Q13 and supply just to know if the short desappear"

Let me know

I've got a lot of cold sweat

:wink:

Don't worry. I do not want to die today and I will not do anything until I am sure that I understand.

This is taking a bit longer to do. So far I have got:

Q9 = 715 : 1
Q10 = 737 : 1
CR33 = 832 : 1

I have to go now and see my Grandson who is sick with two ear infections. I think you will be asleep when I get back. Tonight I will finish checking CR34 and CR25 to CR32 + CR35 and CR36. With all of this removed, are you saying to supply power and see if there is a short? I have not reinstalled any of these since CR 52. Thank you so much for your time.

Q9 and Q10 should have 2 junctions: BE and BC ?
CR 33 seems OK and can be resoldered.

Check all and reinstall all except power transistors before supply; For sure if one component is failled --> do not supply.

Read you tomorrow.

(between your message I'm learning a song of Django Reinhardt as it is very difficult, I have time)

Q9 - B-E = 715 ; B-C = 695
Q10 B-E = 748 ; B-C =745
Cr33 = 832:1
CR 34 = 834:1
CR25 = 494:1
CR32 = 652:1
CR35 = 635: 1
CR36 = 643:1

Installed components in sequence that you suggested and gave power. All are re-soldered except Q12 and Q14 and fuse did not blow. Also Return effects loop jack gives nice clean sound.

The end of the tunnel !

Good job !

Now order matched transistors (I don't know if you can find at Fender spare parts or you have to contact a repairing center, may be standard matched one from "shark" is enough)!

I'm not completely sure but it could work with only 1 power 'leg' , basically half power.

Let me know about the reverb.

Last night I ordered:

TIP147 Transistor PNP Darlington 100V 10A TO-218

TIP142 Transistor NPN Darlington 100V 10A TO-218

I also ordered a new input jack.

You have taught me a lot and together we have given Fender.com a tutorial on how to troubleshoot a blown Power transistor! And I hear sometimes that the French people do not like us Americans. :(
I guess guitars can bring the world together! :D Thank you again so very much and I will let you know what happens with this amp in the future. 8) [/img]

Did you order matched TIP142 and TIP147?

Your information about french people is not reflecting what I know, actually most of frenchies have a lot of great admiration for americans and what you are capable of. But an ocean and different language are between Eu and US, making sometimes difficulties for politician to understand each others, even if I thing that we are in the boat for WW business.

For my part, I often visit US for business, especially Detroit. I never saw mistrust and always very good relation with customers, collegues and suppliers.

Politics is a whole different story. I mind my own business and wish peace and happiness for everyone.

What do you mean when you say "matched set". Is what I have below a matched set:

TIP147 Transistor PNP Darlington 100V 10A TO-218

TIP142 Transistor NPN Darlington 100V 10A TO-218

Mached means that the caracteristics are similar for positive NPN part of the wave and negative PNP part of the wave (sinus) --> mainly Hfe, Vbe

They are both Darlington and share the same technical data. Hopefully I have ordered the correct pair.
