I'm a worship musician playing a telecaster guitar. I play in a medium to large size worship center. I am considering buying a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I've been warned that the HRD is a hard amplifier to tame. That it has two volume settings: "loud" and "louder". Is this the case? Can the HRD be tamed? I use an OCD Overdrive, Boss dd-20 Delay, Boss Chorus, and Phaser primarily. Pretty heavy on the Overdrive and Delay.

Any advice on this would be great!

If you have the money, a deluxe reverb could be what the dr ordered.Easier to tame , but has some lush tones and great reverb to go along with it.More than likely your sound guy will mike it , so 40 watts will be overkill IMHO.DRRI willl cut thru the mix better.

The DRRI is a much nicer, more versatile, well built and reliable amp.
Almost the whole HRD series have been plagued with reliability issues.

If I were going HRD series, I'd be sure to go with the new HRD 3 series. The problem is the heat related issues such as the 5 watt power resistors, PCB mounted tube sockets and cheap components were never addressed, but only time will tell.

+1 on the Deluxe Reverb. It is a great 22 watt tube amp that weighs 42 pounds and is fairly easy to transport. If you think you need more power the Twin Reverb has 85 watt of tube power and weighs in at 64 pounds. A lot harder to transport.

The Twin will certainly give you all the power you want and would get by without miking in all but very large venues. The Twin stays clean until its up past 6 or 7 so if you use an overdrive the Twin is perfect.

With all the reliability issues and malfunctions, would you suggest looking elsewhere? Got any amp suggestions other than the HRD? I don't need much over the 40watt because our amps are mic'd into the house PA in most cases. Suggestions outside the Fender brand? Keep the info coming! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum ! I'm guesing that your not holding down the rhythm. For church, I'd go with the Deluxe Reverb Reissue or the Egnator 20 amp. Had a young guy ask me what half stack and amp he should look for last sunday, told him a 50 watt Marshall & cab. This was when I had spent all morning setting up a tent, chairs, sound system, keyboard, altar, etc. for seating 90 folks outdoors for our Methodist church and was tearing down. I was hot and sweaty. Gotta call that young man and suggest that Egnator. I've heard only good things about them ! Supro can give you first-hand info on that amp. I only play acoustic Blue Grass- Gospel now-a-days, as far as live playing goes, but my background is playing in a blues band. Art

Hi there.

I am going to suggest a different amp to you, a Peavey Classic 50 212.
All tube power with a built in cooling fan. EL 84 power tubes have a bit creamier tone. It has a great clean channel and a drive channel that is easier to control and a footswitchable reverb.

It will handle any venue.

Thanks for all the great info. A friend of mine suggested I check out the Vox AC30 instead of the HRD. It's a bit beyond my budget, but I'm looking for the best quality for the price. Thoughts?

I agree. The DRRI is a great amp. Forget the Twin, I owned a 100 watt SF for over 30 years and it was too loud for many situations. The problem is stage volume being too loud. I have an Egnater Rebel 20. It's one of the most versatile amps I've ever owned. I run it with two 1x12 Egnater cabs in larger venues and it sounds great. It uses a pair of both 6V6 and EL84 power tubes that you can blend to any degree and it also has a dial to go from 1 to 20 watts and the tone stack has a nice range with bright and tight switches. I've had it a year, gigged it all over the place and have had zero problems. It's a single channel amp. Bruce Egnater has been a custom amp builder for over 30 years. He has a forum on Rig Talk and actually moderates there and answers questions when he has time.

Anyone on this forum can tell you I tell the truth and sugar coat nothing. I call them as I experience them. I'm not brand loyal and played professionally for over 20 years. Gear is nothing more than tools of the trade to me. Certain tools work better than others.

My HRDlx was the worst amp I've ever owned in 40 years and spent a lot of time either in the shop or the closet.
The only issues I really ever hear about with Egnater are tube quality issues not amp manufacturing/design issues. I've had neither. You should always carry spare tubes and a backup amp if you play professionally anyway. Problem is they don't make tubes like they used to.
The Egnater also gets stellar reviews in many guitar publications.
The DRRI is a classic. The choice is yours.

You can get a used DRRI for around 600 or 700.I know these types of situations .Played in different size churches of and on for 10 years.Stage volume is a huge issue. Most churches have plexiglass around the drummer to keep the drums quiet and want EVERYTHING miked.A HR ,Classic 50 and a Twin would be overkill. The DRRI or Egnater 20 ,or any similar sized amp would be a good choice IMHO.Unless you want a bad back and a soundman on your back all the time ,I would go smaller rather than bigger. If you are on a tight budget, you might even check out the Egnater tweaker.Might work out if you mike your amps anyways.

I agree if you want to stay fender a Deluxe Reverb (22 watts) or a Super Reverb.(45 watts)
I've had too many issues with our BDRI's to ever recommend them to anyone.

If not just fender then any of the Egnater's or the Peavey's would be great!
(I've really become impressed with the Peavey's since getting the nirtobass amp, the thing is built like a tank.)

I love my BDRI. No problems with reliability here. Great sound. Can be darker and crunchier than DRRI.

The Vox AC 30 is an incredibly loud and heavy 30 watt amp. Sounds great though. If you want the real "Classic Fender Sound" the DRRI fits the bill perfectly. The HRD series doesn't come close, not saying it sounds bad, just not "Fender" to my ears. They are dark sounding amps. The DRRI cuts a mix extremely well as does my Egnater. Using two cabinets with my Egnater Rebel 20, I have easily competed with 50-60 watt amps. Same thing when I had a SF DR way back.
