Is there any great difference between a pair of Grove Tubes 6V6's and an Electro Harmonix 6V6GT pair? My amp has the Electro Harmonix and I was wondering if a change would alter the overall sound very much?

It would change the tone, and remember that you has to rebias the amp

Hi tex turner,

The Groove Tubes (GT) come in different "flavors" if you will. The GT 6V6 R will be a Sovtek made tube, and the GT 6V6 S is a JJ made tube. Groove Tubes says that the Rs are "easily over-driven", while the Ss are "high output, aggressive tone and long life". Each type, R and S will come in one of three color coded labels, Blue, White, Red. The Blue will be for early breakup, warmer sound. White is mid range for all around good sound. Red is clean headroom, brighter sound. The EH tube will sound similar to a JJ, and similar to a GT S Red label. If you want a warmer bluesy sound, you might want to try the GT 6V6 S Blue label, they will sound different than your EH. It seems that many people like the JJ tubes, and the GT S is made by JJ so they should be equal in quality and sound. Just about any different brand of output tube will at least sound a little different, some more than others.

Guitar Center, and others, sell them.

Just select "low 1-3" for the blue label, "Med 4-7" white label, and "high 8-10" for the Red label.

Good thinking! Always a good idea to check the bias on the output tubes when changing to a different type of tube. From the schematic, it looks like the DRRI has an adjustment. :)
