Hey there everyone, and Happy New Year.

:?:
A few weeks back I got a new Super Sonic combo. I like it but it makes a strange rattling noise as I play certain notes. I suspect that this is a sympathetic vibration; but I don't know of what. It sounds kinda like a stack of plates rattling in a china cabinet as a large truck drives down the street. All of the tubes seem to be properly seated (everyone said to check these first) I wonder if it may be one of those metal jackets around the smaller tubes (btw - what are these for? these metal cylinders aruond the tubes??). If I can diagnose and fix this issue myself it would be a great convenience as I work all the time and can't easily get this back to GC where I got it. I greatly appreciate any input - thanks!

I had one that made a noise similar to the noise a light bulb makes when the filament is broken and you shake the bulb. It ended up being a bad tube even though the tubes worked properly. You may want to have them checked professionally.

EvRoCorp - Does it do this a low volume? If it does, you have a microphonic tube (A microphonic tube will ring, howl or produce general feedback problems. It will be more noticeable at louder volumes, but the ring is also noticeable at lower volume). The only way to fix this is to buy a new 12AX7 pre-=amp tube and swap the old for thr new 12AX7, one by one. Be careful, not all pre-amp tubes are 12AX7 tubes, but the other ones are used for the effect loop & reverb only.

I hope Fender QC is following these threads! I doubt the company is having any QC problems with the cash flow from it's customers....p....however.....the reverse seems troubling given the comments we are reading down the line here.

Pre-amp Tube Rattle! And not because they are not seated properly.

I own two Fender tube amps and both of them had the same problem as brand new amps! I love the sound and most everything else about Fender tube amps (including reasonable prices for tube amps) BUT Fender does have some quality issues needing attention. The biggest one, in my mind, is their supplier of tubes. The stock tubes have far too many defects. How can one person buy two tube amps (a Blues Jr. and a Blues Deluxe Reissue) several years apart and both have tube problems? You read about this with Fender on various reviews.

The correction is to replace the faulty tube (I like the Tung Sol 12AX7 pre amp tubes). If you bought the amp locally and they are a Fender authorized repair cntr, I'm sure they'll take care of you.

In my case, I purchased on-line and living in a very rural area 85 miles one way from the nearest rpr. cntr. I elected to buy new pre-amp tubes and install them. It was better (and cheaper) than two round trips considering the price of gasoline. Problem was solved with new tubes. (The on-line store was very good to me and gave them to me at significant discount due to the situation: regular price $14.99 ea. and I got them for $10.99 ea. Of course, you need to check the manual for your amp to see what tubes it takes.) I may have gotten by with buying just one and using trial and error to find the bad on, but I wanted all new ones to be sure.

Somewhere on the internet, I read where tapping the tube lightly with a pencil (while under power) will allow you to find the faulty one, but again, I decided to replace all.

It's a simple problem with a simple cure, but very irritating in a brand new amp!
