I want to share a trick I used and also ask if anyone can think of a downside to this:

I had my amp open to replace my reverb pot, and while i was in there, i decided to do a few other things. among these mods was one to get a more reasonable volume control. the first thing i did was replace the master pot (250k linear taper) to a scrap pot i had from an old amp (100k audio taper). that alone made little difference. so I then added a resistor (i can't remember offhand what size i used..i did some calcs based on what i felt my max volume would be) accross the two outside leads (ground to input..pins 1 and 3...however you want to look at it). I did the same thing for the clean volume pot which is already a 250k audio, though was still too hot.

though i haven't had a chance to really test it thoroughly, it seems to have done the trick for both channels. I now have a lot more adjustable volume range.

i'm wondering if there is any harm in doing this, or if there is any quality degradation as a result. my thoughts are that this simply changes the resistance profile of the pot itself. i hope i'm right.

Hi prattleon,

I have heard of putting resistors in parallel with the pots, but usually on higher ohm pots like a 1 Meg, to essentially get a smaller value pot. You can turn a 1 Meg pot into a 250K pot by adding about a 330K resistor across the pot. Whatever resistor that you put across the pot, the resistance of that circuit will be decreased, so a 250K ohm pot will be less than 250K ohms. If you used a 250K ohm resistor, then the circuit would see only 125K ohms, meaning more current through the circuit, and an effect on the tone (I would think darker/warmer?).

As far as whether it's OK or not, it probably depends on what value of resistor you used. You probably wouldn't want to change the circuit very much, but if it sounds OK, MAYBE it is OK. :)

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.
