Funny that no one has mentioned Traynor as a comparable amp in this price point. They're Canadian made and incredibly durable (their warranty is 5 years, but the first 2 years are "even if you break it" they'll fix it). My buddy has a YCV20 and it's awesome. I've seen used YCV40's going for dirt cheap as well. The cleans and drive on them is fantastic. Frankly, if I were looking for a 30-40 watt amp in this price range, I'd take the Traynor over either the Peavey or Fender.

I haven't looked at a new Traynor amp lately but "back in the day" they built some solidly righteous gear. I knew a bassist who played a YB-something-or-other with a quartet of 6CA7's and a 6 x 10 cab that would eat Fender Bassman's lunch and even give a Dual Showman a pretty good run for its money.

+1 Traynor still makes some nice reliable gear. I tried the Traynor Dark Horse and was seriously impressed. A really well made and nice sounding amp. Like I've said a million times before, look outside the box. Just because a company is bigger or more well known, it doesn't necessarily make it better. Unfortunately for me, the new offerings from Fender have been a real disappointment both in quality and tone. Seems like they're riding just on the reputation that Leo built. I've had Fender amps since 1964, but sadly I've moved on. I'm having a blast with my Egnater gear. It's both rock solid reliable and sounds great.

+1

I'm not "feeling the love" for contemporary products either.

Traynor are definitely cool amps. But, my friend has this funky wooden Kendrick head unit that is something else. Runs 1970's blue glass Tesla (not JJ) E34L. One of the most powerful, bluesy amps I've heard. Nice through a 4 x 12-inch cab loaded with Weber 12A150A. Those tubes in that amp... CRAZY.

Tube like these expcet blue glass:
