Nope, it's happened at different places. Once during at the singer/acoustic guitarist's house, again with a different band during sound check at a club and again with a different band at a church. That last gig was when it was at it's worst. The one thing they all have in common is that they were gigs where I rely on my pedal board much more heavily then when I play blues. I haven't had a problem on a blues gig yet.

Any flourescent lights present at these places?

Oh, so it's exclusively the pedal board as to when this happens?
Have you had the pedal board tied into the amp in all of the tests you've been doing lately?

I don't think there were any flourescent lights at the house or the other venue, but there were at the church.

Pretty much yes, it's always is caused by me hitting a pedal. But you'd think that if it were a bad chord that hitting the pedal again and moving the cords around would stop it, but it doesn't. I have to turn off and on the amp, which is why I'm still not 100% sure I know which one is causing it.

I'm trying to test whether or not the pedal board also causes the same thing to happen on my other amp, the Peavey Classic 30. So far it's only happened with my Fender Deluxe VM because I play with my Fender 95% of the time.

I couldn't get any conclusive results yesterday, but something else just occurred to me. Could it have something to do with the footswitch of my Deluxe VM? I never plug in the footswitch for blues gigs, but I use it for everything else.

There's your solution, get rid of the pedal board and stick to playing da blues :D

What do you use the footswtich for on the VM? Why not try a gig without it, keep the pedal board, and see how it goes.

I was talking about this problem with my guitar tech (who's extremely good at figuring out things like this) and he suggested that I move my volume pedal from the front of the chain to the back of the chain. So now it controls the effects volume as well as the guitar's and I can get true volume swells unlike what I was doing before. That could of been what was freaking it out, since it hasn't happened since. I also took off my fuzz/octave pedal since I hardly ever get the chance to use it.

Actually, for blues I'm becoming less and less dependent on pedals. Sometimes I don't even bother with an overdrive. :) But for the other styles of music I play I need the pedals a lot more. In rock I need a distortion/overdrive because a clean tone won't cut it all the time, and for praise and worship atmospheric effects like delay and tremolo work very well since I'm just playing little accent stuff. Not just chords, because it's really annoying when every guitar player in the band is doing the same thing. The effects help to add something different. I wish I could just stick with blues, but I would hardly ever have a gig if I did.

My sympathies, TGS.

I'm in a couple of different bands too. One's an "oldies" outfit and at the drop of a hat I have to be prepared to play anything from "Solitary Man" to "Kicks". The other squad plays classic biker-bar rock -- everything from "Refugee" to "Sweet Child O' Mine". Stomp boxes make it all credible and convincing.

JMO.

I have a gig in Austin next week (probably already mentioned that towards the beginning of the thread, oh well) and my guitar is willing to let me take his Marshall JCM 800 half stack! I've really always wanted to try playing a Strat through a Marshall (for obvious reasons), but I've never had the chance. It's more for show than anything else since I'm not going to play at a volume any louder than what I play at now. But if I like the drive channel I may be able to have a very minimalist pedal board set up. I could take it down to just one overdrive. The only thing is that it doesn't have delay built in like my Deluxe VM so I may end up buying a delay pedal this week. I need a delay anyway since I'm dying for the reverse delay backwards guitar solo type of effect. I just really like that sound.

I don't know if the amp has reverb either. I guess I could just use a little delay in place of reverb. I don't know, I'm torn. I really, really, really want to play through the Marshall and fulfill my lifelong dream of Strat + Marhshall stack which has quite a bit to do with Jimi Hendrix. I can't help it. :P But on the other hand I like the familiarity of my Fender. I know what to do to make it sound just like I want it to. I've never really messed with an actual Marshall tube amp before. What would really be great is if I could hook them both up and play through both of them. :D But I've never done anything like that before so I don't know what problems I could encounter.

OK, update.

I'm 99% sure it's a power issue on the pedal board. I redid my pedal board before the Austin gig, I added some pedals and took some out. It doesn't matter which pedal I hit, sometimes the whole pedal board would turn off and on if I hit a pedal. I'm going to take a closer look at the power and try to figure out how to fix it. It's definitely not an amp problem (which is a really good thing). Thanks for helping me think through this everyone! I'll post another update once everything's worked out.

A pedal board problem sure beats an amp problem!
Glad you found the culprit.

Is the pedalboard powered?

If so where is the boards power located?

I had a similar situation with my homebuilt board. I hadn't allowed enough clearance between the lid of the board and the PSU. It wasn't a problem when I first built the thing. As soon as the top had a few months stomping on and weakend slightly, I found pressing pedals was interfering with the PSU, particularly the psu for my wireless.

Relocating the power and strengthening the top of the board sorted it for me.

I got a chance to play my Strat through a cranked Marshall a little while ago. It was beautiful!

I have a 1spot which I plug into my Boss TU-2, and a daisy chain which I use to connect all the other pedals to it.
