I have been warned by a pro blues player that he has blown a couple of Fender amps during gigs by driving them too hard in a long gig a couple of times.

I'm wondering if connecting an external enclosure to my SS 60W combo will prevent this problem ever for myself. If it is best to do so for loud gigs, which cab system would be best? I love my amp too much to fuss with anything else! :)

Would the Supersonic 212 enclosure be what I'm looking for?

Here in Australia we run 240V at 50 hz.

Why would you need to push an amp that hard? No PA system? Or would you want to make people including yourself deaf? I'll never understand the need to push an already loud amp so hard with today's PA systems unless you're on a really huge stage.

Thanks for the reply. I hope you are absolutely right about not needing more push than what I already have. I know how hugely loud this amp is. I have noticed this at the quietest levels. Dialling the master volume to 3 is blasting!!!

I just don't want to blow my amp at my first real high volume (pub) gig.

From the amp's spec sheet it looks like you can safely add a second 8Ω load, using the impedance selector switch on the rear panel. That could be any number of options -- a 1 x 12 extension cab (with an 8Ω driver), a 2 x 12 enclosure (with a pair of parallel-wired 16Ω speakers) or a 4 x 12 box wired for 4Ω or 8Ω (the lesser impedance would require disconnecting the amp's internal speaker). Let your ear and your wallet make the logical choice.

I love my Supersonic 2-12 cabinet plugged into my Supersonic 112 combo. The cabinet is two 16ohm wired in parallel to achieve 8ohms, and have never had a problem with blowing the amp. The Supersonic 112 combo can handle an external cabinet as long as it is 8ohms. The amp is wired to handle the 8ohm speaker it comes with, and an 8ohm cabinet at the same time, so it can handle a total impedance of 4ohms. Like it was said earlier, you could unplug the 8ohm speaker and run a 4ohm cabinet by itself. However, I would try the 2-12 cabinet with the speaker in the combo amp. I know three speakers is a little odd, but it does sound good with the Supersonic. Also Fender has made three speaker combo amps, and still do, and they sound real nice.

People have problems in these or any amp when mismatching ohms or bias set too high! It takes a little understanding your amp to keep it in a healthy state. Don't blindly hook up speaker cabs! :)

I have a Super-Sonic 60W combo with a 12" Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. It sounds great but I have questions about what is safe to use as an extension cabinet. If you have the head version you have the "W" switch that lets you select the ohms resistance. For the combo version it auto-selects either 8 or 4 ohms based on what's connected (not sure how that works). I have a FM 412SL cabinet that came matched with my FM 100H head (100W @ 4 ohms based on four 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel). I'm not sure if that's safe to use with my combo? If I plug it in as the only unit in place of the internal speaker that gives me a total of 4 ohms - seemingly the same value if I plug in the internal speaker and an external cabinet of 8 ohms (two in parallel at 8 ohms equals 4 ohms total). The guide for the FM 100H head said it needs "a minimum" of four ohms resistance. Does that imply it's safe to use an eight or sixteen ohm cabinet and just get reduced performance? If it is true is that a universal standard I can apply to any amp (i.e. are amp output ratings for expected cabinet ohms minimum values or do they need to match exactly? Would like to get this clearly stated to ensure any choices made are safe. This equipment is just too nice to mess it up with bad choices.

With the onboard unplugged and a dummy plug inserted the amp should switch to 4 ohm when the 4 ohm cabinet is then plugged in! Using a 4 ohm with the onboard 8 ohm gets you something else!
