Hi way cool jr,

I just had my BJr apart for some mods, there are no other speaker jacks in the chassis or anywhere in the amp, except the main speaker jack and the foot-switch jack. At least the stock amp doesn't have an external speaker jack, there are mods to add one though. Mine is just the standard model, I guess that there could be a special version with an external speaker jack, would like to have it, that would be nice. :)

Actually the enclosed extension cabinet i have contains 1 (8 ohm) 12" speaker only. Can i not use a Y connector in order to play through both internal and external speakers at the same time? I have also heard you can run them "in parallel", but because of my ignorance in electronics, I am not sure of this set up. Any help explaining these two set ups would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

Not sure it's possible with the Y connector and running them in parallel will not work either, check this diagram.

Hi canucklehead,

A "Y" connector would be a parallel connection, and using two 8-ohm speakers would give 4-ohms. That would work ok, but you just couldn't turn it up as loud as with an 8-ohm speaker, without more distortion.

hey shimmilou, thanx for your response. So how does the Y connector work? again, please excuse my ignorance.

I assume that the male end of the connector is inserted in the amp speaker jack, and then both internal and external speaker cables are connected to both female ends of the Y connector?
cheers.

The internal speaker has a male which is inserted into one of the female of the Y and a speaker cord is inserted into the other female and to the external cab BUT this is not a good practice. It can harm the amp if played too loud and/or too frequently.

I tried it once, got a real good sound, no noticeable difference in distortion, then discontinued the practice on the advice of Billm (an authority on the BJ and mods for it). If you want to play with an extension cab + the internal you should get the mod. as shown on Billm webite to be sure as to not damage the amp. The BJ output transformer was not designed for a 4 ohm load.

Most of the small Fender amps especially the newer ones can benefit from an external speaker cabinet. The Champion 600, Blues Jr, Pro Jr etc.

Most lower Wattage amps don't have ext. speaker jacks for one reason only and that is that it's not recommended.

Thanx gus, your input has been greatly appreciated.

hmm, my response from Billm when asked the same question above was: "Yes, it's safe. Connect them in parallel."

With these conflicting responses, best if i just play one or the other, and wait to get Billm's mods.
cheers

Don't sound right to me. You should run an 8 ohm load period. Not a 4 ohm load.

Here is a quote from the Blues Jr manual.
"M . SPEAKER CONNECTOR - This jack provides a connection for the internal speaker OR any quality 8–ohm external speaker cabinet that you choose."

The key words are "OR OR any quality 8–ohm external speaker cabinet that you choose."

thanx 63supro. i remember reading that in the manual.

Consensus is use either the internal speaker or the external cabinet, and not both. I guess i'll save my pennies for the mod.

Many thanx again, for all the responses, much appreciated.

nothing plays through a BJ like a fulltone OCD pedal. NOTHING.
