I need some help. The next step for me is buying a new amp for my electric. Any suggestions on a good amp for a decent price? I was looking at amps in the $300-$600 dollar region. Since i'm a student, i'm not made of money haha. Any help would be much appreciated!

What style of music do you play? That would help narrow down the choices.

In the meantime I suggest anything with tubes, and pre-owned since your dollar will go a long ways in the used market these days. There is plenty to choose from. And if you don't bond with the amp you can sell it for what you paid for it and move on to a different one without losing money. Like cars, brand new amps and guitars depreciate considerably as soon as you leave the store with it.

How about a used Deluxe Reverb Reissue? If you prefer a vintage sound and don't need fancy channel switching and other gizmos. I got one for $500 off of Craigslist back in May. The norm is around $600.

Or a get used Peavey Classic 30 (sorry Fender purists) for around $300 and you'll have plenty of money left over in your budget for a couple of used effects pedals, a few beers with your buddies, and take your girlfriend out to a fancy dinner. :P

Thanks for the help!

I typically play rock, blues and a little jazz. I mostly play acoustic but i'm trying to get back into my electrics a little bit. I just need a better amp

I agree with metropolis74. A used DRRI or a Peavey Classic 30. The Egnater Rebel 20 and Egnater Tweaker are worth a close look too. IMO way better than anything in the Hot Rod series amps. The Vox Night Train is pretty nice too.

If you try the Egnater amps, be sure to spend some time with them. Both have quite a few unique features. I have the Rebel 20 and I think it's one of the best sounding new amps I've ever played in my 40+ years of being a Blues and Rock musician.

Still hard to beat a DRRI though.

New pro juniors are in your price range. Great tone (though not BF Fender) and generally a good reliable portable amp. Fairly clean at low volume, marshalleque when cranked.

Yup..I've narrowed down my choice to the DRRI and the Rebel 20.
I need to try both and decide...

I've seen used Rebel 20 heads going for as little as $380..you'll have to pick up a spkr cab somewhere though.

For a grab-and-go combo, I don't think you can beat the DRRI.

I saw one on my local C/L the other day for $550 (!).

If you want pure Fender tone, go with the DRRI. If you're looking for something different and versatile try the Egnater. Be sure to spend quality time with both amps. Either way they are fine amps IMO. I'm seriously addicted to the Egnater, but then again, I've owned and played Fender amps for a long, long time and was looking for something different. The Egnater 112 cabs are tuned for the amp and sound great. I run two if needed. :D

listen to what arjay and 63supro have to say on this.
if i were in the market for a amp i sure would.
the egnator is a sweet amp i agree. the tweaker is
the more budget minded amp. also look at the
princeton 112. it is a solid state amp but its pretty nice and can be
used at super low volumes if thats important to you.
i bought mine off of a giging acoustic guitar player by the way.
he liked it but wanted a different fender amp.
also check out the fender champion amp.

the 65 DRRI or 65 Princeton amps are great sounding amps, you might be able to find one used, close to your price range. Good luck !

The Princeton's more of a recording amp than a gigging amp unless you want to mic it or run a nice efficient extension cabinet.

I am of the opinion that $300 is not a budget for an amp. It's a down payment. Occaisionally I feel compelled to take an unpopular stance and caution the younglings and newbies out there in cyber-space that if they are squeamish about spending money then they need to find a new hobby. And this is one of those times. Being a guitar enthusiast costs money. That's something you need to understand right now and never forget. It never gets any cheaper. It only gets worse.

Personally, I draw the line at $600 for amps. It's a line that wavers somewhat depending on exactly what amp we're talking about but generally speaking there are no amps priced below $600. There are only junk toys below that point. Even above that point there are some lousy amps. The amp is the most important part of your sound. It's the most important part of the entire electric guitar experiece. Cheaping out on the amp is stupid. That's right, you heard me. Stupid. If you can't afford a decent amp you need to find another hobby.

I do the same thing when people ask me how to find a cheap motorcycle and ride on a budget. I tell them to find someone else to ride with. My days of waiting around sweating in the hot sun while you repair your pile-of-crap bike are over.

Likewise my days of hanging around or advising guys that play junk amps with screeching God-awful tone are over too. Do yourself a favour. Save your money and buy a real amp. In the meantime, play your acoustic. It will clean up your articulation and strengthen your hands.

i really would like to see somebody word it better than this.
(perfect)
yes you might find good used deals aout there but its up to you to find them. as for buying brand new, save a little more and buy quality.
yes i have a whole herd of amps that are below $600, but they served a purpose at that time. i do have very nice high quality amps as well.
in this hobby, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

While I agree in principal with the above thoughts, I don't want to discourage someone just getting into electric guitar. I believe you can get a good amp for $300-600. Used Fender Champs, both silverface and blackface can be bought in the low end of this range. You may not be able to buy an amp you're going to go out and gig with but to say either spend more than $600 or get a new hobby is missing the point. I'll bet most of us started with lower priced amps and worked our way up. It's true you will soon find yourself in search of better gear and spending more all the time, but you have to start somewhere.
